Official: Audi confirms Bmw X6 rival! Also thinking at the new Q4 smaller SUV!

Article by Christian A., on December 8, 2011

If yesterday it was just a rumor, today it became official: Audi will build a rival to the Bmw X6 and may also launch a challenger to the upcoming Bmw X4 (inspired by the Vw Cross Coupe Concept). These words came from Walter de' Silva, design boss at Audi parent Volkswagen Group, who confirmed that Audi signed off on plans for the X6 rival.

Although de’ Silva didn’t want to give any details regarding the date when the car will be launched we do expect this car within three years as Audi aims to overtake Bmw and become the best-selling premium brand by 2015.

The car is currently dubbed as the Q6 by the media and it will feature a low-roof SUV-coupe crossover shape. As expected, the vehicle will be fitted between the Q7 premium large SUV and Q5 premium medium SUV. "We will definitely launch a sportier crossover in between the Q7 and Q5," de' Silva said.

For those who don’t know, Bmw introduced the X6 back in 2008 and the vehicle helped the Bavarian company to expand sales in the premium SUV segment. According to data from market researcher JATO Dynamics, the Bmw X6 the fifth top-selling premium large SUV in Europe, while the X5 got the first place. Regarding the other Audi model likely named the Q4, de’ Silva said that Audi is still deciding whether to add a smaller SUV. As expected, this Q4 will fit between the Q5 and Q3.

BMW X6

For those who want proof that this new Sports Activity Coupe from BMW does have a powerful presence, look no further than its front end. By utilizing the body color in a majority of its surfaces, it allowed the front region to have a lower appearance and making it look more dynamic. Doing so highlights the fact that the BMW X6 had excellent power potential on the road.

Even then, there are still hints that the new X6 carries the design language expected from a BMW. Examples of these include the kidney grille placed in a vertical manner and how the hood was designed. For the xDrive50i, the fins have a titanium finish while in the xDrive35i, they are finished in black. There are indeed many details in the X6 that show design features one would expect from BMW.

As mentioned, there is the kidney grille. There are also the dual round headlights which have been cut off optically at its top. On its sides are the strong curve lines as well as the horizontal lines placed on the rear that helps highlight this new model’s width.

Going back to the headlights, they combine in a dynamic sweeping line and all the way to the side panels. Meanwhile, the compartment lid of the engine, specifically its surface, has striking lines that divide it and then narrows out on to the kidney grille. This is similar to what can be seen on the sides of the lid as well. Positioned more on the outside are the air intakes, which have been made larger as well, and do more than meet the cooling demands of its strong engines.

The air intakes also work together with the side panels in order to further extend to the inside and just above its headlights. In conjunction with the air scoops that show orientation to its wheels, it highlights the stance of the new X6, especially when on the road.

The best way to describe the design of the X6 is that it contains the design DNA of the X Model but in its case has been reinterpreted to result in a sporting and new style. An example of this is how the remarkable driving qualities are visualized especially with the Dynamic Performance Control and the xDrive all-wheel-drive technology.
