If yesterday it was just a rumor, today it became official: Audi will build a rival to the Bmw X6 and may also launch a challenger to the upcoming Bmw X4 (inspired by the Vw Cross Coupe Concept). These words came from Walter de' Silva, design boss at Audi parent Volkswagen Group, who confirmed that Audi signed off on plans for the X6 rival.
Although de’ Silva didn’t want to give any details regarding the date when the car will be launched we do expect this car within three years as Audi aims to overtake Bmw and become the best-selling premium brand by 2015.
The car is currently dubbed as the Q6 by the media and it will feature a low-roof SUV-coupe crossover shape. As expected, the vehicle will be fitted between the Q7 premium large SUV and Q5 premium medium SUV. "We will definitely launch a sportier crossover in between the Q7 and Q5," de' Silva said.
For those who don’t know, Bmw introduced the X6 back in 2008 and the vehicle helped the Bavarian company to expand sales in the premium SUV segment. According to data from market researcher JATO Dynamics, the Bmw X6 the fifth top-selling premium large SUV in Europe, while the X5 got the first place. Regarding the other Audi model likely named the Q4, de’ Silva said that Audi is still deciding whether to add a smaller SUV. As expected, this Q4 will fit between the Q5 and Q3.
