Peugeot RCZ Asphalt Edition makes its debut

Article by Christian A., on October 22, 2010

Peugeot has recently unveiled the Asphalt, a second special edition for the 2010 model year based on its latest RCZ sports car. This vehicle follows the RCZ Limited Edition that was launched in September 2009. This variant will be built in a limited number of units. And according to Luxist’s sources, the version will be produced in a limited number of units.

Peugeot expects to double its number of units and the RCZ Asphalt, with 500 of them being available for purchase. The RCZ Asphalt is finished in Noir Telluric matte black exterior paint and it features new 19-inch black and silver alloys for the exterior, and a pair of custom made sport seats covered in black leather for the interior.

All examples will also be fitted with a number of "Asphalt" logos on both the interior and the exterior. Peugeot has released images that are similar to the new special edition RCZ, but the Asphalt doesn’t have a price tag attached to it.

But when using the RCZ Limited Edition as a guideline, it can be assumed that the Asphalt is priced at around EUR35,500.

The details about its availability haven’t been revealed yet. But since future owners of such a special edition will not get any engine updates, it’s understandable that they will boast that the top-of-the-range 1.6 liter THP engine has an output of 255 Nm of torque.

It also has an overboost system that totals to an extra 20 Nm. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in only 7.6 seconds.

The Peugeot RCZ started off as a concept car called the Peugeot 308 RC Z, unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Even back then, the concept car turned many heads.

Peugeot is a carmaker known for the expertise and passion of its engineers and designers, resulting in the production of highly performing cars with jaw-dropping aesthetics. The carmaker is also known to uphold its brand values, incorporating these into every car it makes.

With its concept cars, however, the company takes a bolder step. Without constraints and with oodles of creative energy, Peugeot comes up with what it calls "lifestyle vehicles," and "truly exceptional" is the only way to describe these. These are the cars that make the French automaker beam with pride while also cementing its sought-after status among motorists and car enthusiasts.

The Peugeot 308 RC Z is one of the best examples for this. It was a concept car that proved irresistible to the car show attendees, who had made it clear that they could not wait for the car to hit the road. It made sense then that the stylish car moved into commercial production and general availability. And in the process, Peugeot proved that it had the determination, innovation and boldness to make a lofty idea into a reality.

With the beauty that you see in the Peugeot 308 RC Z’s outside appearance, it would be difficult not to expect the interiors to be similarly striking and for the car's performance to be nothing short of amazing.

Peugeot's best engineers and stylists worked together to make sure that you would not be disappointed. Working with the aim to maintain the aesthetics and still make it commercially viable, the team also worked on production quality and performance. And thus, the Peugeot RCZ entered the markets.

Making the idea into a reality means that the compact coupé became something unique for the carmaker. It was to be a special and exclusive car that would elicit a wide range of positive emotions from demanding customers. These are the very same customers who have their own expert opinions on what defines great driving pleasure. That sort of uniqueness is symbolized by the name RCZ, which is a total departure from the company's customary numbering system. The brand makes use of one or two zeros in naming its various models.

The logic behind the Peugeot RCZ is to make driving even more enjoyable. The top model has an innovative 1.6-liter THP engine that gives you 200 bhp or 147 kW of power. This allows it to be ranked among the high-performing compact cars, while retaining the look that customers love. What's more, the car is environmentally sound. Even the entry-level model cuts CO2 emissions down to 139 grams per kilometer, thanks to its modern engine technology, reduced weight and improved aerodynamics.

The Peugeot RCZ also comes with the HYbrid4 technology and will use the same power train found on the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4. Its front sports a 2.0-liter HDi FAP 120 kW and a 27 kW electric motor is found at the back, giving you more fuel economy and giving the car the “green” title. The French automaker plans to offer this technology on its coupe, crossover, and other vehicles.

The concept car was to be developed in a shorter time period, which added to the challenges that the team faced. Peugeot’s solution? Assemble the car at the company's production center located within the Magna Steyr plant in Austria that specialized in exclusive one-off vehicles, such as the Peugeot RCZ. This allowed the carmaker to build in small production runs.

Two years after the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Peugeot RCZ finally became a reality and was introduced to the public at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show.
