Infiniti revealed that tomorrow it will be presenting two models, both of which have those striking new faces. These two have been designed to have a “good and evil” pairing with the objective of being able to seduce while also shock. The two models are the Infiniti Q50 and the QX70. Both of them are first one-off models that resulted from the creative partnership of two exceptionally premium brands. Specifically, this is the well-known leather and furniture specialist of Italy, Poltrona Frau, and the luxury performance automaker Infiniti.

According to Shiro Nakamura, who is the Chief Creative Officer of Infiniti, the project was a great chance for two luxury and premium brands to be able to work together. This particular project, he added, began in a natural manner and is mainly founded on the respect and admiration each brand had with their respective vision and spirit.

The design team at Infiniti was inspired by the modernity displayed by Poltrona Frau, he continued, as well as the awe-inspiring craftsmanship and the excellent historic heritage. Nakamura continued by saying that with the two brands having a common goal, it was important that the result would be exhibited as pure artwork. In addition, it needed to be shown at a special event as part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano.

Thus, he said, the public will have a challenging opportunity to be able to experience the dominant brand expression of Infiniti. Indeed, even with what appears to be polar opposite qualities, this “good and evil” theme reveals the same obsession as it relates to passion and precision that distinguishes the two brands.

In a statement, Infiniti’s Executive Design Director Alfonso Albaisa shared that the Q50 and the QX70 already have strong personalities. Under this project, these qualities became even more vivid. As such, he continued, they managed to capture in a perfect manner not only the provocative nature of the brand but even the duality of modern outcomes and traditional practices.

Albaisa said further that by being able to work with Poltrona Frau under a creative collaboration, this has allowed the brand to open the door into a world of craftsmanship and design, something that is usually not part of the luxury automotive establishment. Meanwhile, Piero Valentini, currently the Managing Director of Interiors in Motion division at Poltrona Frau, disclosed that the company has been known, for at least a century, when it comes to leather furniture.

Extending these to an automotive project done for Infiniti, he added, was undoubtedly a natural move. Looking at the models, the distinct look is mainly due to the color schemes. All of which have been clearly inspired by the hues coming from Pelle Frau Colour System leather used in home furniture. This reinforces even more the relationship the automotive world has with high-quality furniture design.

Starting with the Q50, the exterior comes in Zinco with that Lava (which is light blue) contrast, giving it the impression of a knight in shining white armor. These two colors were chosen as they are typically associated with furniture by Poltrona Frau rather than autos. The wheels come in while and a satin finish trim is evident. Rounding off the look is the leather-trimmed exterior mirrors in pure white.

With the QX70, designers at both Poltrona Frau and Infiniti went ahead with Pelle Frau Soul Salomon Black. This is then contrasted with Ribes, which is a dark blackberry red. Ribes was utilized as well on the exterior highlight color, grille slats, and the lower sections of the bumper. The roof rails on the other hand have Ribes leather trimming. These set off the black satin trim, special black body, and the 21-inch black wheels perfectly.

Both models have also been fitted with the softest of furniture-grade leather from Poltrona Frau. This particular leather is the result of the company’s well-known 21-step tanning process. As such, not only is an exquisite look guaranteed but there is that unmistakable feeling of sensuality. A total of 20 hides, measuring around 100 square meters, were utilized in each model with all the hides coming from cattle raised in Arzignano, which is near Vicenza.

Further, 100 various leather sections were hand-cut and even hand-applied to each of the model. The sizes of the sections vary beginning from the small trim located within the gearshift paddles and all the way to the large headlining. Each surface of the two models in fact has been given the full Poltrona Frau treatment.

The cutting, sewing, and wrapping needed three specialists working around 500 hours for each model. Being the “good” model, the Q50 shows pure hybrid power and this is mirrored through the shiny white body with the interior shows the softest of white leather. The “dark side” meanwhile is the QX70 which is powered with the V8 engine. If the Poltrona Frau Q50 is described as innocent then the Poltrona Frau QX70 is mean, comes in black, and is truly menacing.

These two models will be officially unveiled at the exclusive Poltrona Frau event to be held in Milan. This is part of the 2014 Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, the world renowned Milan Furniture Fair, which begins on April 8 and ends April 13. The two one-off models were transformed using materials and methods from Poltrona Frau’s award-winning furniture collection.

The work itself was conducted at the headquarters of Poltrona Frau, located in in Tolentino, Italy. However the two models can first be seen during the exclusive media/VIP event at the Fonderie Napoleoniche exhibition building in Milan. This will correspond with the exhibition of the architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, which will be held at the same time as the Milan Furniture Fair. The four-door compact sedan Q50 will be offered, as mentioned, in a hybrid form. However petrol and diesel versions will be included as well.

Q50 itself comes with cutting-edge technology that is combined with modern luxury. No wonder that ever since the Q50 went on sale in Europe back in 2013, it has been the brand’s most successful model so far in the continent. For those familiar, the QX70 was previously known as the Infiniti FX. This model is considered as the original and first sports car SUV. The design is truly iconic and the high performance features are well known as one of the best in many countries worldwide.

Press Release

Two stunning new faces of Infiniti cars will be revealed tomorrow in a “good and evil” pairing designed to shock and seduce in equal measure.

The special Infiniti Q50 and QX70 models are the first one-off fruit of a creative collaboration between two exceptional premium brands: the luxury performance car maker Infiniti and renowned Italian furniture and leather specialist Poltrona Frau.

The cars are being unveiled at an exclusive Poltrona Frau event in Milan on the occasion of the 2014 Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, the world famous Milan Furniture Fair which runs from 8-13 April. Both the one-off models have been transformed at Poltrona Frau’s HQ in Tolentino, Italy, using techniques and materials from its award-winning furniture collection.

“This was a great opportunity for two premium, luxury brands to work together. The project started very naturally, based on mutual appreciation and respect for each other's unique brand spirit and vision”, said Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer.

“The Infiniti design team was highly inspired by Poltrona Frau’s modernity, coupled with a great historic heritage and overwhelming craftsmanship.

“The result of our common goal deserves to be exhibited as pure artwork at a special event within the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano in order to provide the public with a provocative opportunity to experience Infiniti’s predominant brand expression.”

The “good” Infiniti Q50, with its pure hybrid power reflected by a gleaming white body and interior of softest white leather, is joined by Infiniti’s design icon, the QX70 – the other half of a very dynamic duo but a car unquestionably from the dark side. Black, mean and V8-powered, the Poltrona Frau QX70 is as menacing as the Poltrona Frau Q50 is innocent.

Despite their polar opposite characters, “good and evil” display the same obsession with precision and passion that characterizes both brands.

“Both the Q50 and the QX70 have strong personalities already,” said Infiniti’s Executive Design Director, Alfonso Albaisa. “With this project we have made those personalities even more vivid so they perfectly capture not just Infiniti’s provocative nature but also our duality of traditional processes and modern outcomes.”

Albaisa added: “Working with Poltrona Frau in such a creative collaboration has opened a door for us into a world of design and craftsmanship outside the luxury automotive establishment.”

Piero Valentini, Managing Director of Poltrona Frau’s Interiors in Motion division, said extending the qualities that have marked out Poltrona Frau’s leather furniture for more than 100 years to an automotive project for Infiniti was a natural move.

A large part of the cars’ unique appearance is down to their colour schemes – they are inspired by hues from the Pelle Frau® Colour System leather for home furniture, further reinforcing the link between top-level furniture design and the automotive world.

For the QX70, Infiniti and Poltrona Frau designers decided on Pelle Frau® Soul Salomon Black leather with contrasting leather in Ribes (a dark, blackberry red). Ribes is also the exterior highlight colour, used on the lower bumper sections and grille slats. The roof rails are trimmed in Ribes leather, setting off the special black body, black satin trim and black 21-inch wheels to perfection.

The Q50 is truly a knight in shining white armour: the exterior colour here is Zinco with a Lava (light blue) contrast, again both colours until now more associated with Poltrona Frau furniture than cars. White wheels, satin finish trim and, most indulgently, pure white leather-trimmed exterior mirrors complete the picture.

Poltrona Frau’s softest furniture-grade leather from the Italian firm’s famous 21-step tanning process is used throughout both cars, ensuring not just exquisite looks but an unmistakable aura of sensuality. Twenty hides – about 100 sq m – were used in each car, all of them sourced from cattle in Arzignano, near Vicenza.

One hundred different leather sections, ranging in size from large headlining to small trim around the gearshift paddles, had to be hand-cut and hand-applied to each car. Virtually every surface inside was given the Poltrona Frau treatment; the cutting, sewing and wrapping alone took three specialists almost 500 hours of work for each car.

The first appearance by “good and evil” is at an exclusive media/VIP unveiling at the Fonderie Napoleoniche exhibition building in Milan, to correspond with an exhibition of the work architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, which runs concurrently with the Milan Furniture Fair.

The Infiniti Q50, available in hybrid, petrol and diesel forms, is a compact four-door sedan whose innovative technology allied to modern luxury has made it Infiniti’s most successful model in Europe since it went on sale in 2013. The QX70 (formerly the Infiniti FX) is the original sports car SUV. Its iconic design and high performance are recognised as class-leading in countries around the world.
