Popular Science names Fiat’s MultiAir technology on “Best of What’s New” list

Article by Christian A., on December 15, 2010

For its innovative features that raise the bar in terms of fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness, Fiat’s MultiAir technology has been nominated by the US magazine Popular Science on its “Best of What’s New” in 2010.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies developed the innovative platform that features an electro-hydraulic intake valve management to cut fuel consumption and emissions levels.

In the U.S., the Fiat 500 will soon feature the MultiAir technology, which will cut the car’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10%, while achieving 10% more power and 15% more torque.

The Fiat 500 will be equipped with a four-cylinder 1.4 liter FPT engine. The engine’s management controls the air intake for every cylinder, for every stroke, without the use of a throttle valve. In addition, emissions are reduced by ensuring careful combustion control and monitoring.

The series of cars that are offered with MultiAir includes the Abarth Punto Evo 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 165 HP, Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 MultiAir 105 HP and 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 135 HP and 170 HP, Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 Multiair Turbo 170 HP, Lancia Delta 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 140 HP, Fiat 500 0.9 TwinAir Turbo 85 HP, Fiat Bravo 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 140 HP and Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 MultiAir 105 HP and 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 135 HP.

For now, only petrol engines in the Fiat range can have these improvements but there are several developments for diesel engines as well.
