Porsche reconsidered the Macan design when Land Rover launched the Evoque

Article by Christian A., on December 3, 2012

The success of the Range Rover Evoque prompted Porsche to give the new Macan SUV a bolder appearance, according to Porsche design chief Michael Mauer. The Macan will start to sell in late 2014 as part of Porsche's plans that by 2018, it would already have doubled its annual vehicle sales to 200,000. Mauer divulged that Porsche felt it had to reconsider the Macan’s design after Land Rover launched the Evoque in 2011.

He told Automotive News Europe that there were several details it “could be more daring with." Mauer did not provide what changes the Macan will be given in order to get the more aggressive look. Production of the Evoque started in July 2011. It immediately received praises for its design, particularly its radically rising beltline.

Mauer said that it’s a common practice for designers to change its future model’s design after seeing that of its rival. He added that he isn’t scared to implement changes and that he found the Evoque to be “interesting” when he saw it. However, Mauer assured that the Macan won’t be a copy of the Evoque. He explained that it will be a “real Porsche” and will be the sports car in its segment.

Macan is built on the same platform as the Audi Q5 and it will be Porsche's fifth model, slotted under the larger Cayenne. Porsche has made a 500 million euro investment in its factory in Leipzig, Germany, to build the Macan. Porsche hasn’t revealed the production volumes but according to German press reports, the SUV is likely to have an annual output of 75,000 units.

Porsche Macan’s impressive and assertive front is a distinctive design component. Its large air intakes are typically Porsche, highlighting the performance class, where Porsche vehicles usually belong. In the Porsche Macan Turbo, stylistic elements called C-blades are positioned in the air intakes on both right and left sides, accentuating the car’s sporty look and providing a sophisticated aerodynamic response.

What’s more, the Macan’s wraparound bonnet creates one impressive design detail, extending down toward the wheel arches and enclosing the headlights. The bonnet’s imposing size and the precision lines that run toward the front give the car a powerful and broad appearance. Meanwhile, the bonnet’s seamless surface presents a clean front. Additionally, the car’s concentration on the road becomes evident when seen from the front.

Macan’s side view, along with its athletic sloping roof line, produces a sharp profile as well as emphasizes its dynamic nature. Meanwhile, its design lines run to the rear, accentuating its broad, sculpted wings. These design lines, together with the window graphics or the lateral glass surface edges and the D-pillar shape, pay homage to the 911’s design.

The sideblades found at the front and rear doors’ bottom are also design highlights for the side view as well as another means of customization. These are dynamically formed inserts, which are available as an option in different materials. Their design is reminiscent of the 918 Spyder’s lower door seams, as is the entry guard for the front door. And together with sophisticated door handles, they make the doors look narrower and the sides sportier and more streamlined.
