Ram has finally announced that they will have a competitor for the Ford F-150 Raptor, and that is the Ram TRX. Since the automaker now has a new Ram 1500 platform available, the company is looking to expand its trim and offerings, hoping to get more market share. To be able to achieve that, and please truck enthusiasts at the same time, is to shift their focus to domestic rival Ford.
This news has been welcomed by many, even on a day filled with a handful of product news from Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati, we still do not have complete details. Last April, it was reported by 5thGenRams that there will be new versions of the trucks, a TR that’s been toned down, and the performance oriented TRX. However, they did not mention anything about a TR.
Initially, Ram hinted at an off road performance truck back in 2016 with the Ram Rebel TRX Concept. To get the public interested, the concept was given as much as 575 horsepower. Considering that Ram has confirmed we're getting the TRX, interest must have been high. A vehicle like this would also allow the automaker to pad their profit margins.
While the TRX boasted a powerful V8 engine, rumours have been circulating that the production engine will pack as much as 707 horsepower like that of the Hellcat engine. It will be similar to the setup found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk when engineers decided to strengthen various driveline components for the added power.
Right now, it is only a matter of time before we see the TRX, and we expect to see it before 2022, since Ram has recently laid out its five year plan in Italy. In fact, there has already been a concept, and with the Raptor being the only off road performance truck of its kind in the market. We doubt that Ram will want to wait to cash in on joining the competition.
Back in April, we have already heard of Ram’s plans to go against the Ford F-150 Raptor with the Ram 1500. Sources also said that a Rebel TR and a Rebel TRX version are coming as soon as 2021, and both will apparently be packed with performance.
Having said that, an update confirmed that the Rebel TR will be getting a 7.0 liter V8 engine under the hood. This will be able to produce 520 horsepower and 525 pound feet of torque. That’s actually just a bit less than the TRX concept gathered from its supercharged 6.2 liter V8, which was 575 horsepower. Together with the Rebel TR will be the Ram Rebel TRX with 6.2 liter supercharged V8 from the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcats.
