RM Sotheby’s lineup in its upcoming Paris sale is getting large, with the Renault 5 Turbo 2 high-performance hatchback joining a number of classic cars in the auction list.
Introduced in 1983 as the replacement for the Renault 5 Turbo -- a car designed mainly to compete in rally races but was also offered as a road-going version – the 5 Turbo 2 was one of the French carmaker’s biggest hits. Interestingly, the 5 Turbo 2 was a result of Renault’s efforts to pare down the 5 Turbo to make it less expensive, thus making it more affordable to a greater number of customers.
Thus, the 5 Turbo 2 didn’t have the distinct interior of the 5 Turbo. Moreover, Renault replaced the aluminum body panels of the 5 Turbo with steel panels on the 5 Turbo 2. Despite being lighter and less expensive, the 5 Turbo 2 offers the same levels of performance, using the same engine (delivering up to 158 bhp) as its predecessor. In terms of road performance, the 5 Turbo 2 could sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h (120 mph).
The result of the changes proved fruitful for the French carmaker, as the 5 Turbo 2 was more popular than the 5 Turbo. Around 3,200 5 Turbo 2 units were produced by Renault.
Now, the Renault 5 Turbo 2 in RM Sotheby’s February auction is powered by a 1,397 cc inline four-cylinder engine -- with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection – that delivers 160 bhp of output. Sitting on a wheelbase of 2,430 mm, this Renault 5 Turbo 2 features race-tuned all-around double-wishbone suspension with anti-roll bar and rear coil springs. It also comes with four-wheel ventilated disc brakes.
Although this Renault 5 Turbo 2 was built in the 1980’s, it is relatively new – as indicated by the fact that it only registered around 5,900 kilometers (3,666 miles) on its odometer. As its plate indicates, this Renault 5 Turbo 2 is registered in Bulgaria. Modifications made include new and aftermarket leather seats. Aside from that, this Renault 5 Turbo 2 is still wrapped in factory white finish and sports original headlights, taillights, and fog lamps as well as wheels and tires.
