Shelby presents the GT500 Super Snake Wide Body

Article by Christian A., on January 18, 2013

At the booth of Shelby American, Inc. at the North American International Auto Show, the new 850hp 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake “Wide Body” and the new performance tuned Shelby Focus ST were presented. These two cars represent both extremes of Shelby American’s range of high performance vehicles.

Shelby American was able to boost the performance of the stock 662hp 2013 GT500 into a street-legal 850hp. But then, Shelby made sure that it’s still 50 state emissions legal. It has also been tuned on 91 octane pump gas. Shelby put in a new Wide Body option as well. Gary Davis, vice president of production at Shelby American, said that it offers the handling of a super car due to its 13 inch rear and 10 inch front wheels that are covered in serious rubber.

Aside from the aesthetic modifications, the optional wide body package also gives the Super Snake much more traction. Shelby gives customers several color choices: Satin Black, Gloss White, Silver, Blue and Red stripes. For the first time ever, Shelby is offering wheel options such as a rear-only or front and rear “wide body” packages.

The new Wide Body Super Snake has what it takes to dominate in the muscle car segment but what’s likely to draw more attention is the comeback of Carroll Shelby’s beloved “Pocket Rocket.” The post-title package for the 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake has a starting price of $28,995 for the 662 hp version but it could go as high as $39,995 for the 850 hp variant. Opting for the wide body option raises the price by $17,995 more (excluding the base GT500).

2013 Shelby GT500 is a new and improved Shelby indeed. Enhanced lighting design gives the car personality. Made of two LED bars in the rear. They definitely catch the eye. The panels running along the car now match the vehicle body, which gives the car more elegance. A new quad tip exhaust sits in the rear of the car along with a glossy black panel separating the tail lamps and diffuser.

Also brand new are the Shelby GT500’s forged-aluminum wheels, with 19-inch front and 20 inch rear wheels. There is also an optional package with an option for a unique wheel. The front and rear wheels are also paired with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar.

With the new darker finish on the vehicle, the wheels are intimidating and have also got new look spoke designs. Unapproachable, yet elegant, the wheels simultaneously appear sinister and premium. They are also incredibly lightweight.

As it is the 20th anniversary of SVT, anniversary recognition pieces will be displayed as part of the car’s design on both the inside and outside. Badging to recognize this milestone will be present on all vehicles. SVT certainly has come a long way from the 1992 Chicago Auto Show where the 1993 Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning were unveiled.

Shelby also benefits from a huge amount of work undertaken in the aerodynamics area, making certain that this new make performs at its best for all speeds. Thanks to CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), manufacturers had great success in pinpointing exactly where the air was going. This enabled them to enhance cooling which leads to a smoother and a more grounded and secure drive at any speed.
