The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive completed a lap in the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in just seven minutes and 56.234 seconds, allowing it to become the first electrified series production vehicle that has mastered the 20.832-km long Green Hell in under eight minutes – all in a record-setting fashion that has already been certified. The amazing feat of the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive in one of most difficult race courses in the world came just two weeks after the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 achieved its first overall victory in the 24 Hours Nurburgring.
Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, remarked that they were able to show the potential of the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive by setting a new record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. He noted that Mercedes-AMG is the first carmaker to have been able to create an electrically powered series production vehicle that could complete a lap in the Nordschleife in under eight minutes – a proof of the company’s constant “innovative vigor.“
Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, remarked that the new record set by the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive on the Nurburgring Nordscheife shows the special position of Mercedes-AMG’s groundbreaking drive solution. He remarked that the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive was able to generate a breathtaking sensation thanks to a number of factors like: its four electric motors located in close proximity to the wheels; its efficient battery technology derived from Formula One and the individual wheel torques “AMG Torque Dynamics.” Further factors include the SLS eSound and the "AMG Lightweight Performance" design strategy.
The Mercedes-AMG SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive used in breaking the record in the Green Hell is a series version that will celebrate its introduction in June 2013. Its propulsion is managed by four powerful electrical motors mounted on each wheel. With a total power output of 552 kW (751 hp) and peak torque of 1,000 Nm, these electric motors allow the electric version of the Gullwing to become not only the fastest but also the most powerful electrically powered series production vehicle in the world. At this power level, the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive could sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The AMG has a brand pledge to offer a new dimension of driving performance, as already realized in several of its vehicles. On the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive, this pledge of superior performance dynamics has been made possible by AMG Torque Dynamics and by the wheel-selective all-wheel drive.
Mercedes-AMG GmbH considers the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive as the most "electrifying" gullwing model it has developed in-house. Its powerful high-voltage battery – setting a new standard in terms of energy density and power density as well as efficiency -- is the result of a collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth in the United Kingdom. The high-voltage battery is a fruit derived from experience with KERS hybrid concepts used in Formula 1 racing.
As engineered, the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is highly responsive to an accelerator pedal and offers linear power output. Since the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is moved by electric motors, it offers instantaneous torque, which means that as soon as the driver presses on the accelerator pedal, max torque is released. This vast power delivery sans any disruption as well as its spontaneous torque build-up is complemented by a vibration-free motor running attributes.
