Due to the fact that the Smart ForTwo is quite old, Mercedes-Benz is now working with Renault on a replacement for the popular two-seater. According to our sources, the all-new Smart ForTwo and the successor to the Renault Twingo will share the same platform. The new Smart ForTwo will arrive in 2014 and the Renault Twingo replacement will arrive in the same period.
Regarding the current version of the ForTwo Electric, this vehicle will be upgraded in 2012 and according to Autonews it will receive an improved interior but also a new set of lithium ion batteries made by Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, a joint venture between Daimler and Evonik Industries.
Mercedes-Benz has big plans for its sub-brand and it is also planning a new four-seater based on the new ForTwo platform that could go on sale in 2015. The car is expected to have a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Currently, sales of Smart brand in the United States have fallen by 76 percent.
According to statistics, only 5,927 units were delivered in 2010… a significant drop if we take a look back in 2008 when Smart delivered 24,622 vehicles.
As a result, Daimler decided to relaunch the brand in the Unites States and announced that it will spend $35 million on a new marketing campaign! Still, the customers need to see a new lineup in order to see things moving…
The latest version of the Smart Fortwo will have an exterior offered with a wider range of colors. While the previous version only had six colors, the new model will have seven colors. The seventh color is the matt light green although the blue metallic will now be replaced with the light blue metallic color. All colors selected however will have a trendy matt finish. In addition to the colors, customers can also request to have the rear apron, front spoiler, and side skirts, to come in the same color as that of the exterior. The company expects that in the near future, it will be offering the option as well to have the fuel filler cap in body color. Aside from being innovative, this two-seater is not only more stunning than ever but it is also more environment-friendly.
Smart brand Managing Director Marc Langenbrinck shares that the brand is guaranteeing its models to be better and to be even more desirable in all aspects. This is why the new Smart Fortwo is apt for today as it not only has style but is attractive as well, he adds. The new Smart Fortwo, he continues, makes use of high quality materials, puts extra attention to details, improved comfort and enhanced its functionality.
Langenbrinck adds that since its customers generally look for alternatives and think out of the box, the new model offers a wide range of engines with the ability to be customized to suit their needs. It was in the autumn of 2011 when customers first saw the new Smart Fortwo with an engine that is more environment-friendly, a new look for the interior, and an exterior that has been upgraded.
As mentioned earlier, there are now seven colors offered for its exterior and all will come with a trendy matt finish. The new Smart Fortwo is powered by new petrol engines and refined with the option to equip it with either the 45-kW unit or the 52-kW version, though both have CO2 emissions not exceeding 100 g/km. For this latest generation, the brand will be offering a limited edition version that includes high-class equipment. Going back to customization, the brand is offering for the tridion safety cells the option of having it in white. Meanwhile the cabrio soft top can be in either blue or red. Offering more customization options are the alloy wheels and the daytime driving lights with LED. While the interior does have a new design, the use of new fabrics and colors give it an atmosphere with a high-quality feel. As expected, the entertainment and communication systems all have advanced technology.
