Tesla is biggest ZEV credit supplier in California in past year

Tesla Motors Inc. was the biggest seller of zero-emission vehicle credits in California in the period covering Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013, while Toyota Motor Corp. was the biggest trader of hybrid-car credit trades, according to a report by the California Air Resources Board. According to the report, Tesla transferred 1,311.52 ZEV credits in the period, 32 times the figure of Suzuki Motor Corp.

On the other hand, Toyota transferred 507.5 AT PZEV credits, generated by its Prius hybrid. General Motors Co., meanwhile, acquired the same number of PZEV credits. According to Dave Clegern, a spokesman for California Air Resources Board, all carmakers covered by the program are “in compliance and that to us is the goal.”

California, which has authority to establish pollution conventions considered as more stern than US standards, is requiring carmakers to sell electric or other non-polluting vehicles in proportion to their market share in the state, with an aim to have 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025.

Carmakers who have acquired ZEV credits from Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013, were Chrysler Group LLC, GM; Honda Motor Co.; Jaguar Land Rover; Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.’s Subaru; and Volkswagen AG. The report, however, didn’t disclose the carmakers’s respective ZEV credit suppliers.

The tally indicates credits based on exhaust emissions instead of numerical units generated per vehicle. Clegern remarked that while Suzuki is not anymore selling electric vehicles in California, carmakers can transfer credits accumulated in the past. Suzuki discontinued sales in the US in 2012.

Not only is the Model S from Tesla the first sedan to be fully powered with electricity, it is the best example of the fact that automotive engineering can still be advanced to a new level. By being able to offer performance and efficiency, which is then combined with safety, it has changed how customers see 21st century cars. The Model S has been given the highest possible ratings with regards to safety. It also has the longest range for an electric vehicle. Finally, by making software updates available over-the-air, improvements are continuous.

The Model S has been fitted with a number active safety features as standard. There is for example blind sport detection and collision warning. Included as well is the lane departure warning and the automatic emergency braking. However, ensuring that the Model S is indeed the safest out there is the electric drivetrain that has been placed under the vehicle. By utilizing the brand’s very own platform, it made it possible to put the battery on the floor. Because of this, the Model S is able to have an exceptionally low center of gravity resulting not only in lowering the risk of a rollover from occurring, but improving the performance and even the handling.

Since there is no engine, Tesla’s electric sedan, compared to other performance sedans on the market, reveal a larger crumple zone and thus absorb more energy that is generated in the event of an impact on the front end. Not surprising to know that the Model S has been given a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and even the Euro NCAP. In testing conducted in the U.S., it was even found out that this model set a new record as it showed the lowest possibility of occupants being injured. The Model S though is not just about safety as it has convenience features included, though optional. Examples include summon, autosteer, traffic-aware cruise control, and autopark.
