Tesla Supercharger will not be free for those who order in 2017

One of the privileges of owning a Tesla has been the free use of the company’s charging stations. However, that may no longer be the case starting next year. Tesla’s Supercharger will no longer be free beginning 2017. That is, for their new customers. Instead, new Tesla owners shall receive certain allocation of free kilowatt hours. After which, they must pay for the use of Tesla’s charging equipment.

Luckily, current owners of Tesla vehicles can keep enjoying the free access to the charging points. This also applies to those who place their orders before the year ends or those who happen to get their vehicles delivered before the 1st of April (of the following year). The company states that this would allow them to reinvest in their network of Superchargers. The potential development of this product, they believe, would bring Tesla’s current and future owners the best charging experience.

Beginning next year, new clients will be getting 400 kWh complementary Supercharging credits. That should at least cover about 1,000 miles. Tesla says that there will be “a small fee” after the owner has consumed the allotted amount of free electric energy. According to their statement, there is no exact cost to be given at this time. But the amount may vary per region depending on the current electricity price. Given that, Tesla stressed that their company will never make a “profit centre” out of this.

The California-based company’s latest financial report indicates that they have a total of 725 Supercharging stations with about 4,500 individual charging units. Aside from this, around 3,222 destination chargers are situated in different shopping centres, restaurants and hotels.

The new policy came after Tesla suggested that the new Model 3 buyers could purchase a package containing unlimited use of the Supercharger. Otherwise, new Model 3 owners will have to pay for the use of the charging outlet. As a matter of fact, this announcement was just made earlier this year. The company’s idea was meant to make their products more affordable and not to make it seem more expensive.

Tesla’s financial reports for the 3rd quarter show that the company is on track to becoming positive. New vehicle deliveries have increased by up to 114% compared to the previous year. Before the year closes to an end, Tesla would start the actual production of battery cells at the newly opened Gigafactory in Nevada. Tesla currently has a net profit of $22 million. This is the second time that the company has disclosed its income to the public.
