Toyota has launched the 14th generation of the Crown sedan, which is offered in Royal and Athlete versions, in Japan. Brochure images of this sedan have recently been leaked. The Royal may be powered by a V6 2.5-liter, while the Athlete is also available with a V6 3.5-liter. These are available in both RWD and AWD versions, and could be mated to either a six- or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new model Toyota offers a hybrid version for the RWD models that feature a 4-cylinder, 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with a high-torque motor that allows the sedan to achieve a fuel economy rating of 23.2 km/L (4.3 l/100km; 55 mpg-US) under the JC08 test cycle. The traditional engine delivers 178 HP (131 kW) at 6,000 rpm and has a peak torque of 221 Nm (163 lb-ft) between 4,200 rpm and 4,800 rpm.

The electric motor offers an additional 143 HP (105 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. The combined output has a rating of 220 HP (162 kW). The following are offered as options: leather seat package, rear comfort package (rear accessory socket, rear center armrest, rear power seats and rear side airbags), driver support package (automatic anti-glare rearview mirror, automatic windshield wipers, etc.) and the advanced package (pre-collision system, intelligent sonar and back sonar, etc.)
