Toyota Motor Sales is targeting to exceed 2.4 million in volume in the United States across its Toyota, Lexus and Scion divisions. Toyota sold 2.37 million vehicles in the US in 2014. The extra volume is expected to surge in when Toyota starts rolling out the redesigned 2016 Tacoma in the fourth quarter.
Bob Carter, Toyota’s senior vice president of automotive operations, recently remarked that the carmaker’s dealers are real excited about the Tacoma, “but they need more of them.” Toyota sold 155,000 units of the current Tacoma in 2014, and is planning to surpass that figure this year.
To cater to the growing demand for the pickup, Toyota plans to add a third production shift at its Baja California site in Mexico in April to hike its annual Tacoma capacity to 84,000 units. Toyota also builds the truck its San Antonio factory in Texas.
Dealers are also expecting to have their sales booted by the next-generation MY2016 Prius hybrid that will be rolled out later this year.
According to Jay Caldwell, owner of Caldwell Toyota dealership in Conway, Arkansas, Toyota will make “a lot of changes.” He even remarked that when the carmaker showed a picture of the Prius on the screen, “low chatter” can be heard all around.
He said the new Prius hybrid will have "better styling," improved handling and better fuel economy.
