The latest version of the VW Golf R looks very different from the regular Golf when it comes to exterior style. Instead of the naturally aspirated 3.2-liter V6, it will get a 2.0 TSI turbo four-cylinder direct injection engine that delivers 270 hp at 6,000 rpm.
Jalopnik said that the first batch of vehicles will arrive in the U.S. in a red color. VW clarifies that this is just a pre-order and other colors will come later. VW also said that just 1,000 units will arrive in the U.S.
The car can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 5.7 seconds. The Volkswagen Golf R has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The new R model varies from the R32 since its performance greater than the GTI’s. It is heavier and it has higher resistance to its AWD system but then it gets a boost in power and torque.
In addition, the VW Golf GTI Edition 35 will soon arrive in the U.S. where it will be dubbed as the 30 Edition to mark the 30 years that it has been available in the country.
Volkswagen revealed that the Golf R will have an interior and exterior that will be entirely modified. This is not surprising as the same thing was done to the Scirocco R, its sister model, and even the first two generation models which are the Super Golf I, released in 2002, and the Super Golf II, launched in 2005. The result was that the Golf R gets its own personality with a number of well-coordinated improvements.
These changes were done by a design team that was led by Klaus Bischoff. The new Golf R shows that this particular model series has reached its peak, considering that the quality of the style continues to follow the "La Semplicità" principle, first put forward by Walter de Silva, Head of Group Design. Since this sixth generation model makes use of high-end materials for the interior, it manages to make it to the next level which is the higher class.
While it does benefit from the impression of quality, it is in a different level when it comes to the power reserves. That the Golf R is being positioned for a higher class is reinforced by the special upgrades that were developed by none other than Volkswagen Individual. One of the more interesting features in the interior, though offered as an option, is the Top Sport seat system that offers exceptional ergonomics. All the driver needs to do is sit down and then adjust the seat horizontally and vertically. After that, all that’s left to do is make adjustments to the steering wheel and then put the seatbelt on, and everything is ready. Once seated, everyone will feel as if the seats have been customized. When joined with other models that have undergone customization, like the GTD and GTI, this makes the Golf R set benchmarks among its rivals worldwide.
On the sports seats are center panels that have been covered with grey-black honeycomb textured Kyalami design. Kyalami stands for the race course of the same name located in South Africa.
The seat’s front edge is furnished with fabric in Titan Black while the inside panels of its side supports were covered with the San Remo crystal-grey microfibers. All other parts of the seats come in black, much like the roofliner. On the head restraints, the front has been embroidered with the R logo. Offered as an option are the motorsport shell seats though this is only for the driver and the passenger in the front. Should the customer avail of this offer, the center panel of the seat will now have the microfiber San Remo fabric on the inside with the outside using black leather to cover it. All of the seams that are in the interior come in Art Grey and this includes the decorative seams that are present on the leather and three-spoke leather steering wheel.
To ensure that the steering wheel offers the optimum hand grip, the top and bottom portion utilizes perforated leather. Its sides meanwhile, while having ergonomic motorsport qualities, have been wrapped in continuous leather. The spokes of the steering wheel use a fine black piano color which rounds out its athletic look in addition to giving it a sophisticated character. The center spoke also sports the new R logo. Because of the way the piano paint is able to contrast with the chrome, it is able to express its desire for accuracy and elegance in each detail. There are still a number of new features like the instruments that have the blue pointers. Also sporting the R logo are the tread plates of the aluminum door, the carpet floor mats, and the R gearshift knob.
Rounding up the customization are the instruments exclusive for the Golf R, the highlights of the door with the Silver Lane style, and the sport pedals made of stainless steel. The Golf R will also have the Climatronic, which is an automatic climate control system. For entertainment, one can listen to music with the radio-CD system (4 x 20 Watt) RCD 310 that comes with dual tuners and MP3 player. Customization is also present in the exterior like the new brakes and the new wheels. Even the bumper has new designs. On the front portion, its bumper area is distinguished by the three large air intakes. The intakes’ louvres have high-gloss black paint.
This same paint is also used in the two louvres of the grille in the radiator. On the right side of this grille is the R logo that comes in chrome. The Golf R also comes with the standard LED strips which have been incorporated to the two outer air intakes and also act as its daytime running lights. Even without the surcharge, the bi-xenon headlights are able to light its way across the night. When viewed at its side, it is easy to recognize the Golf R owing to the mirror housings in high-gloss black, side skirt extensions having the same color as the body, and Talladega wheels. Now that the front and profile have been described, the only thing left to do is to look at the rear portion. From this angle, it is easy to single out the Golf R with its new taillights, a larger roof edge spoiler, the R logo, and the bumper where the tailpipes and diffuser are. The taillights make use of the conventional yet unique LED technology with its covers being smoked. Order books for the Volkswagen Golf R will open in the German market starting the end of 2009.
