It’s not a secret anymore that Bentley is planning to introduce a smaller 4.0-litre direct-injection V8 engine on the current Bentley Continental GT model, which was introduced back in September at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.
What we didn’t know until now, is that the new engine will be offered in two versions: single- and twin- turbocharged. The single-turbocharged version will deliver around 415 hp according to Autocar, while the twin-turbocharged version will deliver a total output of 555 bhp.
This means that the total output delivered by the twin-turbocharged V8 engine will be very close to the current engine that powers the Continental GT: an impressive 6.0-liter W12 engine delivering 575 bhp and 700 Nm of torque.
Although we have no details regarding the performances of the new V8-powered Bentley Continental GT, we do know that the W12-powered model wis capable to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed is claimed to be 198 mph (308 km/h).
Regarding the new V8 engine, this will also be available on the Bentley Mulsanne flagship sedan which currently uses a 6.75 liter twin-turbo V8 delivering 505 bhp and an impressive 1000 Nm of torque.
For both the design and the engineering teams at Crewe, the newest Bentley Continental GT coupe is a great chance to set an exciting and bold direction for the Continental, Bentley’s most respected name. The Bentley Continental GT, both ground-breaking and highly successful, was first introduced in 2003 and embodied the first step that the brand’s revival and responsible for defining an entirely new market segment.
However, the offering of a luxury GT that had excellent usability made sure that it remained loyal to the Bentley grand touring spirit. With the Continental GT, the brand hopes to build on the achievement done by its iconic predecessor.
While it does manage to get that GT’s spirit, this 4-seat coupe delivers higher levels of standard when it comes to engineering, design, craftsmanship, luxury, refinement, dynamic performance, and everyday practicality. With a beautifully sculptured new body, it results in having an appearance that is fresher and more defined.
The interior has a more modern feel to it and delivers new levels when it comes to comfort, cabin design, and even hand-crafted luxury. A good example of this are the seats the give greater support and even larger leg room. Then there is also the sweeping dashboard that shows modernity and more style.
Its new touchscreen infotainment system has a lot of features like Google Maps, entertainment, and hi-tech navigation. The interior is also equipped with the current Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology and the Dirac Dimensions digital sound processing that offers improved audio quality.
Paefgen Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr Franz-Josef shared that the new Continental GT is an example of an automotive work of art given the modern and elegant design, as well as the, superb craftsmanship. When driven, it feels like a supercar but hasn’t compromised practicality or made any of the sacrifices one would expect in a drive, he added.
It is indeed a vehicle that can be enjoyed not matter what time of the day it is, Dr Franz-Josef continued. The design team was headed by Director of Design Dirk van Braeckel.
Under his leadership and inspired by the brand’s iconic past models, the team made a vehicle that had a modern sculptured body but equipped it with the latest production technologies to guarantee that body integrity and high standards of quality are present.
