Article by Christian A., on November 12, 2012

Mercedes-AMG is introducing the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the high-end super sports car version of the gull-wing model that takes inspiration from the SLS AMG GT3 racing version. The fifth Black Series model from Mercedes-AMG was designed in line with the "AMG Lightweight Performance" strategy and boasts “breath-taking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction.”

SLS AMG Black Series offers a power/weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp and has a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms. It is powered by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine that delivers 631 hp at 7400 rpm, enabling the most dynamic gull-wing model of all time to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.

This coupe is brought to a new level with highly emotional shift and response times from combining coil-over AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the weight-optimised forged AMG light-alloy wheels with newly developed sports tires with the electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission.

The AMG Aerodynamics package is available as an option to those who want to boost the vehicle's driving dynamics. Everyone knows what the Black Series is as it’s a name that automobile experts and enthusiasts recognize.

The fifth Black Series model offers a new dimension with the gull-wing model. Its preceding models were the SLK 55 AMG Black Series from 2006, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series from 2007, the SL 65 AMG Black Series from 2008 and the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series from 2011. The price of this breath-taking car hasn't been announced yet!

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series has a design inspired partly by the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car. Developed to comply with FIA GT3 rules, the SLS AMG GT3 was able to prove itself as a serious challenger against other super sports cars. By the 2012 season, the gullwing racing car is already being fielded in over 15 racing events on four continents.

One of these events was the 24-hour Dubai race in January 2012, wherein the SLS AMG GT3 captured three crowns. Moreover, the SLS AMG GT3 has already grabbed three driver and team titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship, the ADAC GT Masters and the FIA GT3 World Championship. In addition, the SLS AMG GT3 has managed to earn podium finishes at several short-distance, four- and six-hour races – allowing it to win around 37 wins in the current season, as of October 28, 2012.

In terms of aerodynamics, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series features Black Series-specific elements like a front apron with carbon fiber-reinforced plastic front splitter; carbon-fiber rear apron with diffuser; and side sill panels with carbon inserts. It is provided with larger air intakes -- with carbon-fiber flics – to help ensure that air optimally flows into the front cooling modules.

New Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series boasts wide flared wings that are now wider by 13 mm on the front and 26 mm at the rear, Furthermore, the car’s sports tires measure 275 mm on the front and 325 mm at the rear. Completing the exterior looks of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series are its darkened headlights and rear lamps with black surrounds.

Just like SLS AMG GT3, the SLS AMG Black Series features a carbon-fiber bonnet with a central air outlet designed not only to dissipate engine heat, but also to increase downforce at the front axle and enhance the car’s Cd value. The SLS AMG Black Series also comes with some features similar to those of the SLS AMG GT3, like the carbon-fiber side insert with air outlet and a black fin.

This element helps reduce engine compartment temperature while making the vehicle more stable even when raced on the tracks. Up front, the SLS AMG Black Series comes with a high gloss black radiator grille marked by a wing-like cross-fin and the Mercedes star.
