Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is world’s fastest hybrid

Article by Christian A., on August 20, 2012

A ‘Hybrid Speed Record’ was set by a turbocharged Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, which was driven up to 185.394-mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This production-based hybrid has attained the fastest speed that has ever been reached at the Salt Flats. The Jetta Hybrid received modifications according to the rules of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA).

As a result, the 1.4-liter turbocharged TSI four-cylinder engine can deliver 150hp. It is partnered with an electric motor that produces 27hp. Volkswagen accomplished the high-speed record while using a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Volkswagen R&D, which is based in Wolfsburg, Germany, modified the powertrain.

California-based A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering made changes on the car so that it could be driven safely at high speeds on the salt. Meanwhile, the engineers at the Volkswagen Test Center based in Oxnard, California were tasked to do the implementation and final calibration of the drivetrain. Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago was driving this car when it set the record.

Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, VW Group of America, said that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid has proven itself to be a unique offering in the compact hybrid class with this speed record. He added that the Jetta Turbo Hybrid offers a combined fuel economy of 45 mpg but it continues to offer the fun-to-drive nature that can be expected from a VW model in a segment that’s dominated by uninteresting vehicles.

Powertrain

Volkswagen disclosed that its Jetta Hybrid will be able to display pure efficiency as it is now equipped with the turbocharger 1.4-liter petrol engine. It’s a lightweight unit given that the engine weighs 98 kg. This TSI engine will become part of the hybrid module along with the decoupling clutch and an electric motor. The hybrid module is integrated to two drives, wherein the engine is immediately disengaged from the drivetrain when the driver decides to run on pure electricity.

It will be disengaged as well under the “sailing” mode, which happens when braking or coasting. The hybrid module is the one that operates the drive system allowing the Jetta Hybrid to display performance qualities of a sporty cruiser. Despite there being downsides to a 1,395-cc displacement, this four-cylinder model allows for torque at 250 Nm available at just above idling speed, or starting at 1,400 rpm.

That’s not all as this vehicle can retain high maximum torque at a constant rate for a maximum of 3,500 rpm. VW revealed though that it is just as durable even when running at speeds of German Autobahn levels.

No wonder then that the brand has managed to sell at least 1 million units in Europe alone. Though it may have been downsized, the maximum power it can deliver is higher than even the standard Jetta and its five-cylinder 2.5-liter engine. According to VW, these TSI engines are the same ones that have won a number of awards, one of which was the notable “Engine of the Year Award” given in 2011.
