Volvo Chairman Li Shufu has confirmed that the Volvo Concept You unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show will soon enter production. At the Frankfurt auto show, Li said in an interview that the board has given its approval to produce the concept (known as You); however, it has yet to finalize the timetable that may be "somewhere around 2015." This is one of Chinese owner Zhejiang Geely’s strategies to bring the Volvo brand further upscale.
The four-door fastback concept has rear doors that are hinged at the rear and are called "suicide doors" in the industry. It was built on the SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture), which is Volvo's new front-wheel-drive platform that will also be used for the next generation of the 60, 70, 80 and 90 series.
Li said that the You’s production version would be the largest and most expensive car that Volvo has ever produced. Vehicles that have this platform will only come with a four-cylinder engine.
Its dimensions are comparable to those on the current Volvo 80 sedan. This car is meant to rival the Audi A6, BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E class, according to spokesman Per-Ake Froberg.
Li said that for Volvo’s expansion, it is ready to enter joint ventures. He said that there are presently no ongoing talks except with Geely in China but just like other car companies, it is open to any strategic cooperation opportunities.
Volvo’s amazing You Concept exceeds our expectations when it comes to the big segment. According to Stefan Jacoby (Volvo’s President and CEO), the You Concept gives us a glimpse of what the next generation of large cars is going to look like. The concept has a combined modern Scandinavian design, technology and craftsmanship that is truly world-class.
The future generation of Volvo’s will include smart pad technology for the interiors. This will go perfectly with the car’s elegant design inside and out. The good news is that the You Concept has already gained favourable responses according to social media and surveys. It’s probably because this Volvo has all the qualities of a luxury sedan with a coupé-like exterior.
Peter Horbury (Volvo’s VP for Design) concluded that the most significant feedback has been applied in developing Volvo’s Universe Concept. They made the features look classic while at the same time, more daring than ever. He also defined the new trend among European car consumers, one of which is the fastback profile mirrors.
In fact, majority of the Chinese consumers have already began to embrace this design. This gives the You Concept the global edge. Nonetheless, they are grateful for the very warm response, something that will work towards its successful development.
One of Volvo’s major goals is to create world-class cars that will also meet the consumer’s day-to-day requirements and way of living. The President and CEO of Volvo mentioned that they are willing to go with the times and that they are bending over backwards just to give customers exactly what they need in a luxury car. He further stressed how the You Concept is reflecting the buyer’s modern perception on luxury cars. Aside from elegance and outstanding quality, the car industry is headed towards smart technology. This is where Volvo has the advantage as it already has one foot in.
