We love spy pictures and videos. For fans and enthusiasts, or for journalists and rival carmakers, spy images and videos are coveted. Well, our inherent love for spy images and videos is basically fueled by the fact these graphics allow people to have a basic idea of the overall appearance of a new model. Moreover, these spy graphics helps confirm whether a carmaker is on its way to bring a new vehicle offering to the market.
Spy images and videos are usually taken from afar by enterprising photographers or so-called “carparazzi” while the vehicles or their prototypes are being tested on tracks or on the road. Thus, it was very surprising and highly unusual for Volkswagen to provide a spy video of some of its newest products. VW took some good shots of its new offerings like the Arteon coupe, Tiguan Allspace and Up! GTI being tested in the harsh environment of South Africa.
These vehicles were being tested for their endurance both on paved and rough roads on high temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius. Frank Welsch, Board Member for Development at Volskwagen, remarked that to push the engines of these new models to the limits, they were driven with the air-conditioning units turned on. This way, VW could make sure that air-conditioning units work even then. He added that these vehicles – especially the Tiguan Allspace – were being tested on dirt and paved roads to make sure that occupants always feel comfortable under any road condition.
As its name indicates, the new Tiguan Allspace delivers superior interior room, thanks to a wheelbase that is around 11 cm longer than a regular Tiguan and to an optional third row of seats. This Tiguan is now being marketed in China as the Tiguan L, although is it expected that its European version will be homologated to suit the taste of customers in Europe.
Meanwhile, the new VW Arteon is expected to be better styled and roomier than the current VW CC. Essentially a renamed 2018 Volkswagen CC, the 2018 VW Arteon is seen as an effort by the carmaker to boost the sales of the four-door car. VW is marketing the new Arteon as its new flagship sedan with superb practicality and enough space to accommodate even a tall person.
Unlike the new Tiguan Allspace and the new Arteon, the new Up! GTI being tested in South Africa is wrapped in no camouflage. After all, it is the sporty GTI version of the VW Up! The video practically confirms the existence of the new Up! GTI powered by a 1.0 TSI turbo engine that delivers 115 PS.
