If the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is not powerful enough for you, just wait until April in order to see an extreme version of this vehicle that will be unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. Autocar says that the German manufacturer is going to unveil the new vehicle dubbed Golf R Evo, powered by a tuned version of the EA888 2.0-liter engine featuring a new cylinder head and induction system.
The engineering of the new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol unit was overseen by Volkswagen’s head of engine development a.k.a. Fritz Eichler, same man responsible for the development of Mercedes-Benz AMG division’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine used in the A45 AMG that generates 360 hp.
The engine found on the Golf R Evo is expected to deliver around 370 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The current Golf R is rated at 296 hp and 380 Nm of torque and is able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds while top speed is limited to 250 km/h or 155 mph.
The new Golf R EVO is expected to get the same six-speed dual clutch gearbox and electro-mechanical Haldex multi-plate clutch four-wheel drive system.
During an interview at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Fritz Eichler said that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is able to deliver a maximum of 400 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Moreover, the Vw Golf R Evo is expected to feature a stripped-out interior and carbon fiber body panels for a total weight of under 1,400 kg. More details to be revealed!
