Chris Evans quits Top Gear amid poor ratings

Article by Christian A., on July 14, 2016

It looks like UK isn’t just having issues with their loss at the Euros against Iceland and their exit from the European Union, but it looks like crisis has finally crossed over to the entertainment industry. Following a stream of issues for the past few years, things look bad for British television series Top Gear.

Last Monday, host Chris Evans revealed that he was stepping down from his stint at the popular show. Well, the show has already been on the rocks for quite some time even when ex-presenter Jeremy Clarkson was still on it but it looks like the boat is slowly sinking for Top Gear. It’s just been a couple of months since the show aired with its current line-up of presenters but things just aren’t working for both the show and its hosts – specifically, head presenter Chris Evans.

According to The Sun (a British tabloid), Evans has been confronted with various issues for the short period that he has been hosting the popular auto show – and that includes his behaviour towards his co-hosts, the staff, BBC executives and the media.

Top Gear has always exhibited the wild, carefree and adventurous side of its hosts (and guests). But it seems like Chris Evans just doesn’t fit the part, even the audience and Top Gear crew have noticed that. His behaviour towards the show’s staff and crew has always made their way to the public through the tabloids. He has been reported to exhibit a diva-like behaviour on set – he barks orders at the crew and on one occasion shouts viciously at the producer who was reduced to tears; he even throws tantrums like a child which are clearly uncalled-for; and his control freak behaviour has been enough to drive BBC execs and Top Gear staff crazy. And in addition to that, it has even been reported that Evans dislikes his American co-host Matt LeBlanc.

Sure he had been doing a balancing act between his two jobs – a morning radio stint on BBC Radio 2 and Top Gear – which anonymous sources say has driven him to his breaking point but it is not enough reason to treat people as he has been doing right now; and neither does the “people get pissed at work” reason work. So that’s probably why BBC executives wanted to put a stop to this madness.

What’s likely to happen now is that the rest of the gang (and we’re talking about Chris Harris, Sabine Schmitz, Eddie Jordan and Rory Reid) will be given more attention on the show. Amid all the problems that Evans is facing, Top Gear ratings have been plummeting as well.
