When Ferrari commenced sales of the Ferrari LaFerrari three years ago, it gave the limited production hybrid supercar a starting price of over $1.4 million. Even today, this price tag is already considered very high. The Italian carmaker only produced 499 examples of LaFerrari, and that is one reason why this supercar has become a highly expensive collector’s item as it changes hands.
How about selling a LaFerrari at a price tag of EUR10 million ($10.74 million)? Well, a group called Garage Pereira Guillaume S.A. is selling a red Ferrari LaFerrari at the online automotive marketplace Mobile.de at the same exact price. According to the listing, this Ferrari LaFerrari was registered in March 2014 and so far has 1,700 kilometers (1,056 miles). Pictures say that this LaFerrari is in good condition. But at EUR10 million, this price of a LaFerrari could be considered insane. That is more than seven times pricier than the original tag of a new LaFerrari three years ago.
But this is not the first time that a non-brand new LaFerrari was sold more than its original price. Last year, a hefty buyer in Florida bought a LaFerrari from the Naples Motorsport dealership for $5 million or more than 3.5 times its original price. However, compared to the LaFerrari being sold at Mobile.de, this example has only been driven 202 miles! This means that Garage Pereira Guillaume’s LaFerrari has traveled over five times the distance than that of Naples Motorsport’s.
Ferrari first unveiled the LaFerrari at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show. It is the first Ferrari supercar with HY-KERS system and an ICE (internal combustion engine) as its core. Its 6262-cc V12 engine could deliver up to 800 CV and could rev up to of 9,250 rpm. This powerplant has a very high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a high specific output equivalent to 128 CV per liter. This ICE is complemented by a 120 kW (163 CV) electric motor, which means that the overall power system of LaFerrari could provide out up to 963 CV in combined output with total torque of over 900 Nm.
In addition, LaFerrari's power system allows for constant supply of power throughout the rev range, as its electric motor could provide high torque levels even at low revs. LaFerrari's hybrid system includes two electric motors: one powering the driven wheels while the other is running the ancillaries. These motors are powered by a 60-kg battery pack mounted on the floor of the chassis. This lightweight and compact battery could provide the highest energy density possible for automotive application. Aside from the usual charging systems, the batteries could also be recharged under braking or when the V12 develops more torque than required (during cornering).
The excess torque is then converted to energy and stored in the batteries instead of being sent to the wheels. The electric motor is mated to a F1 dual-clutch gearbox. Ferrari engineers were able to give the LaFerrari an aerodynamic coefficient of nearly 3, which is considered as the highest degree of efficiency that could be achieved with a road car. The LaFerrari is also provided with sports active aerodynamic devices like front diffusers and guide vane on the underbody as well as rear diffusers and rear spoiler – all generating downforce sans any compromise in the supercar’s drag coefficient.
