If you are looking for an extremely lightweight car, the Lotus 340R should definitely be part of your list. It is a sports car that has no roof, no doors, while missing some body panels, making it lose a lot of its weight indeed. The good news is that this 2000 model is currently looking for a new owner, and is being sold on Bring a Trailer.
When it was released, the company decided to just produce 340 examples of the 2000 model year, and only eight units have a left hand drive setup. Of the 340 cars, only a few were brought in to the United States, making it a very rare vehicle. But what makes this Lotus 340R even more special is the fact that it has barely been used, with only 347 miles (558 kilometers) on its odometer. This car is almost brand new and will definitely be a perfect track car. This track focused car rides on the chassis and mechanicals of a Lotus Elite, but you are limited to only drive it on the track as it is not a road legal model. This is probably the reason why it has a very low mileage.
The Lotus 340R comes with a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine that will not be found under the hood, but instead is mounted in the rear. It enables the car to give an output of 177 horsepower (131 kilowatts) and 126 pound-feet (170 Newton-metres) of torque. This is mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. Comparing this to today’s standard, it may not sound like a very fast car, but take note that it only weighs just under 1,150 pounds (521 kilowatts), letting it do the 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 kph) sprint in only 4.4 seconds - still quite fast compared to a lot of cars today. Furthermore, it has a top speed of 133 mph (214 kph).
With a car so light, expect it not to have a lot of extra nice stuff in the cabin. In fact, it is quite scarce that we can only brag about the blue Alcantara accents on the steering wheels, seats, and door panels. Naturally, it does not come standard with carpets, high tech infotainment systems, and a stereo to keep weight at a minimum. It does have one thing that a lot of cars do not have though, a fire extinguisher on the front passenger seat just in case something goes wrong.
This car has been put up on sale a few times now, but now is only the second time it is being announced publicly. The eBay seller had an asking price of $65,000 for the Lotus 340R last March. But those who are interested might get this for a little less at Bring a Trailer.
