There is no doubt that there’s something beautiful about classic cars like the Porsche 911 and the Toyota FJ, but companies like Icon and Singer helped a lot of people ignite their lust for the classics, but this time, it’s upgraded with modern elements. Aside from the companies I mentioned earlier, there is also Mechatronik Engineering, which has the same aspirations but does things differently. For instance, the Pleidelsheim, Germany based company decided to work on classic luxury cars instead of sports cars and off roaders. And their latest work involves a two-door Mercedes-Benz.
This model was originally built between the 60’s and the 70’s, the W111 coupe is the German shop’s latest reworking. Speaking of classic cars with a modern twist, the coupe had been given a Mercedes-AMG SLK 55 5.5 liter V8. This helps the car produce 360 horsepower (268 kilowatts). You might now be wondering how much this vehicle cost. Well, the company listed it on their website for $464,000 (400,000 euros).
Aside from getting a powerful engine upgrade, the W111 now has an improved ABS brake system to ensure that it can stop the coupe when its going too fast. It now sits on a modern chassis too. What’s great about this car is that it can deceive people, and that is the point. For instance, one would not be able to figure out that this comes equipped with an AMG-sourced V8 by simply looking at it. However, if you want to go purely old school, Mechatronik Engineering can revert everything back to OEM spec if that’s what you prefer.
As you can see in the photo, the exterior is finished in a jet black paint job, while the cabin is dressed in caramel-coloured Cognac leather. The interior gets a more comfortable cabin too, including three-point safety belts.
Nevertheless, most parts of the vehicle remain original. These include the steering wheel and the radio dial. Also, the odometer only has 7,020 miles (11,299 kilometers) on it. However, we are not sure whether that number is a reflection of the original miles or if it represents the miles driven after the new engine was installed.
But does it really matter? All we’re looking at here is a beautifully restored classic Mercedes W11 priced slightly higher than other restomods at $464,000. For comparison, Singer sells their version of the restored Porsche 911 for $350,000, while Icon’s version of the FJ can be had for just under $200,000.
