Steve Jobs has left a lot of things for us to enjoy in this world. In fact, a huge percentage of the world’s population probably owns at least one of his creations. Not only is the guy known as a genius, he left a mark in the modern world, as he inspired a lot of people through his talent and the products he developed - from the very first boxy Macintosh, to the simple, user-friendly iPhone. Now, there is one thing that Jobs owned that you can keep in your garage if you wish. It’s not the very first computer he made, if that’s what you’re thinking. It’s even better; it’s a 2000 BMW Z8 finished in Titanium silver with only 15,200 miles on its odometer that you will find on RM Sotheby’s listing.
The story behind this car is that CEO of Oracle, Larry Ellison, told Jobs to buy a Z8 because it was apparently the pinnacle of auto engineering at that time. Jobs believed him and ordered the 67th example of the BMW Z8 that was specially assembled for him, which was delivered on October 6, 2000. It came with a silver exterior and a black leather interior. Inside, it came with a BMW branded Motorola car phone. Of course, that was before the first iPhone was introduced in the mobile market.
In the year 2000, the Z8 was the company’s halo product, where its selling point was that it took design cues from the late 1950s BMW 507. All in all, the company built a total of 5,703 units during the production run, and 2,543 of those were reportedly exported to the United States. The Z8 came equipped with a 4.9-liter V8. Production was then taken over by Alpina, where they did some mechanical tweaks like adding an automatic gearbox, helping it produce 555 horsepower.
After Jobs sold the BMW Z8 to its second owner in 2003, this guy sold it about a year later. And it seemed like he regretted selling it, so he had to convince the third owner of the vehicle to sell it back in April 2006. Luckily, he got the car back. Ever since then, the second (and also the fourth) owner of the car kept it until this day. Finally, he has made up his mind and decided that he will put it up on auction for good - no more regrets this time, we hope.
RM Sotheby’s confirmed that the model had gone through meticulous service since it was produced. The roadster still remains with its original parts like the hardtop, the stand for it, and even the cover and the manuals - all in great condition. Today, it has a market price of $300,000 to $400,000, and it will be up for grabs at the New York Icons in Manhattan on December 6.
