Top 10 fastest police cars in the world

Article by Christian A., on January 5, 2016

There are two main qualities that make up a good police car. The first is that it needs to be sturdy enough in order to ram suspect's vehicles or even fences. This is why in the U.S., the preference is to use muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and the Chevy Corvette.

When criminals see this chasing them, the better choice is to surrender at once or face the prospect of being rammed off the road. The second important characteristic that cop cars should have is speed. For what use would a police car be if it is not able to chase down speeding criminals.

While many countries continue to rely on muscle cars, others have chosen to focus instead on speed. A good example of this would be Dubai where one can see a supercar on almost every street. In order to ensure that the law is followed, Dubai's police department has their own counterparts to solve the problem.

While many of the fastest cop cars are in Dubai, there are other countries that have invested to make sure that criminals do not get away with their crimes. Below is the list of the 10 fastest police cars in the world.

Lexus IS-F

Starting the list is the Lexus IS-F which was introduced in the UK back in 2009 in order to solve the problem of speeding. With 416 horsepower and top speed clocking in at 168 mph, it can more than hold its own with most cars.

It is used by the Humberside Police in Northern England. The Lexus IS-F can run down not just speeders but also criminals even when they are driving in high-speed sports cars. So if ever you're in that part of the world, be careful and resist the urge to floor the pedal.

Ariel Atom

Next on the list is still from the UK police department with the Ariel Atom. Considered as one of the most unique cop cars, it is used by police in Avon and Somorset. Able to reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, the Ariel Atom can reach speeds of up to 168 mph.

Though it has the same speed as the Lexus IS-F, the faster acceleration ensures that it comes in at number 9. Designed like a Formula 1 race car, it is sure to keep wannabe speedsters on their toes.

Location: UK; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 2.5 seconds; Top Speed: 168 mph

Spyker C8 Spyder

Like the Ariel Atom, the Spyker C8 Spyder is also one of those unique looking police cars. Used mainly in the Flevoland province of Netherlands, the C8 Spyder has the appearance of a standard coupe.

It was introduced by the police department back in 2008. With a top speed of 186 mph and 4.5-second acceleration, it gave many speeders in this part of the world something to fear.

While Spyker had already stopped manufacturing cars and declared bankruptcy, there are rumors saying that it has plans to return with an electric supercar.

Location: Netherlands; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 4.5 seconds; Top Speed: 186 mph

Police departments from other countries are generally envious of the German police especially with their use of the Audi R8 GTR. Speeding up to 202 mph, it can go from 0 to 60 mph in merely 3.2 seconds.

Though the typical Audi only has 518 horsepower, ABT Sportsline fitted it with the V10 5.1-liter engine for a total horsepower of 620.

It ranks low on the list because it is mainly put on for show and has yet to be used to stop crime or even go on patrol. Its power however ensures a place in the list.

Location: Germany; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 3.2 seconds; Top Speed: 202 mph

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

The police force in Italy was more than happy to announce that it was getting a new Lamborghini. Donated by the company itself, it was in honor of the 152nd anniversary of the department in 2004.

However it was only in 2008 that Lamborghini donated the Gallardo LP560-4 which could actually be used to patrol the roads. Top speed is 203 mph with acceleration recorded at 3.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph due to the 560 horsepower from the V10 5.2-liter engine.

This enabled it to keep up with most cars without breaking a sweat. While there is a danger that this supercar would become outdated, the Italian police force had nothing to fear as the company has donated a Hurácan to serve as replacement.

Location: Italy; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 3.7 seconds; Top Speed: 203 mph

Ferrari FF

Halfway in the list, we go from Europe to the Middle East. This is just the first of what the Dubai Police Department has to offer. The Ferrari FF was modified for use specifically by Dubai's police force.

This all-wheel drive vehicle can reach 208 mph is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. While this list also includes other vehicles from the Dubai Police Department, what makes this unique is that it is for use exclusively by the female officers of the department.

It was initially included as part of the department's fleet in 2013. More units are being added.

Location: UAE; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 3.7 seconds; Top Speed: 208 mph

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4

Next on the list is another unit from the UAE. Apart from Italy, Dubai is the only other police department the uses the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4.

The Aventador LP 700-4 is able to reach speeds of 217 mph with acceleration to 60 mph from zero of 2.9 seconds. Though this may serve as a warning to those who want to test the police, this is not even the most formidable and powerful in the fleet.

Location: UAE; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 2.9 seconds; Top Speed: 217 mph

Aston Martin One-77

Third on the list is again from the Dubai Police Department. Unlike the previous two cars on this list, this one is different as it not just a supercar but also one of the rarest.

With only 77 units made, the Aston Martin One-77 is equipped with a V12 7.3-liter engine allowing it to reach 220 mph with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

This model has been specially modified as a police car. Even when driving a Porsche, the person being pursued will find it difficult to escape the One-77.

Thus if you think even for a minute that your car gives you the right to speed through their highway, Dubai police will show you that they have more than a match for whatever you’re driving.

Location: UAE; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 3.5 seconds; Top Speed: 220 mph

Brabus Rocket

Germany manages to enter the list again and makes it to number 2. The Brabus Rocket is actually a Mercedes CLS that has been amped-up. With extreme characteristics ranging from a 3.2-second acceleration from 0 to 60 mph to a top speed of 225 mph, it rivals anything that violators have brought to the roads.

However, it would be impossible to see this one driving around the Autobahn. The German Secretary of Transportation instead used it to be the symbol of a new program aimed at safe driving and inspiring people to modify their car in a responsible manner.

Location: Germany; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 3.2 seconds; Top Speed: 225 mph

Bugatti Veyron

Topping the list is another one from the Dubai Police. Though the list already has amazing cars, Dubai's police force did not stop there and got themselves the Bugatti Veyron, which is considered as the second-fastest car in the world.

With this particular unit, it is clear that the police in Dubai could now deal with anything thrown at them. It only takes the Bugatti Veyron 2.5 seconds to reach 60 mph and top speed is recorded at 268 mph.

The only thing that could possibly get away from this one is a Hennessey Venom GT. This particular unit cost the department $1.6 million but with the performance it offers, the benefit more than makes up for the cost.

Location: UAE; Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 2.5 seconds; Top Speed: 268 mph
