Here’s what we know about Vladimir Putin’s new armored luxury limo

Article by Christian A., on April 25, 2018

One thing that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin will really need would be a vehicle that isn’t only comfortable, but one that will also protect him from the most brutal attacks. And that’s why his new luxury limousine had to go through a long development and testing period. And after many sessions of crash testing, Putin’s ride is finally ready to drive him around the country.

Denis Manturov, Russia’s trade minister, told national daily newspaper Russia Today, that the president’s new vehicle will be spotted in action at Putin’s presidential inauguration on May 7. There is no better way to form a new government and denounce your western rivals from a position of luxury and comfort.

Before the end of the month, Putin’s car is scheduled to be delivered to the Kremlin. The newly re-elected Russian premier is said to have been closely involved in the project, even finding the time to get out of the office and drive earlier versions of the vehicle.

Understandably, full specs of the president’s new armored luxury car are not available. However, we can share details about the engine underneath the limo’s hood. It is said to be equipped with a Porsche developed 4.6 liter V8 turbocharged engine that delivers 592 horsepower and 650 pound feet (881 Newton metres) of torque. This engine is mated to a Russian-developed nine speed automatic transmission. The whole initiative is called the Cortege project, and development of the cars has been carried out in conjunction with Porsche and Bosch.

Putin’s ride will have the usual expected standards for any vehicle of a prominent head of state. At the very least, it will be similar to Donald Trump’s limo which features a closed air supply, spare blood, and inches thick armored plating all over the car. Trump’s car is actually strong enough to withstand a direct hit from a rocket launcher.

The Russian presidential limousine project is so complex that it could be a business plan for a new automotive startup - from the initial platform, a whole range of cars are being developed, with sedan, MPV and even SUV derivatives on the way. But in fact, this notion is close to the truth, and that is thousands of the new cars will be produced next year for use by government departments and the Russian security services before it goes on sale to the public in 2019. We also heard that the Russians have cashed out around $119 million only for the development of new vehicles.
