2014 NAIAS: Acura introduces the 2015 TLX GT race car

Article by Christian A., on January 14, 2014

Besides the 2015 TLX Prototype, Acura took the wraps odd the 2015 TLX GT race car at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. This new race car will compete in the GT category of the Pirelli World Challenge Championship.

To be campaigned by long time Acura Motorsports partner RealTime Racing, the new TLX GT will move Acura in the top category of the Pirelli World Challenge, facing competition, which includes the Cadillac CTS-V, Audi R8 LMS, Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes SLS, Nissan GTR, Porsche 911 and Ferrari 458.

According to the official press release, the new race car was developed by HPD a.k.a. racing arm of American Honda Motor Co and will feature HPD chassis and aerodynamic performance parts approved for Pirelli World Challenge competition.

Under the hood, it will carry a twin-turbo V6 engine developed by HPD from the normally aspirated, production TLX. Moreover, the race car will use all-wheel drive, as found in Acura's Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The Acura TLX GT Race Car will be campaigned by Wisconsin-based RealTime Racing, which is known as the most successful team in Pirelli World Challenge history.

Acura TLX Prototype

The premium carmaker took the veil off the new Acura TLX Prototype to provide a glimpse of what the new 2015 Acura TLX performance-luxury sedan could offer in terms of design and performance. Acura is set to commence sales of the new 2015 Acura TLX mid-year at Acura dealerships across the country.

Acura developed the new TLX according to the "Red Carpet Athlete" theme. This means that the 2015 Acura TLX is meant to offer compelling fusion of refinement of a luxury vehicle, the athleticism of a sports sedan as well as the thrilling performance by the next-generation Acura engines. The new Acura TLX is the third vehicle in the premium carmaker’s sedan lineup, following the Acura ILX compact luxury sedan and the Acura RLX luxury performance sedan.

Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of American Honda Motor, called the Acura TLX Prototype as a precursor of amazing things Acura is offering to its sedan customers. He remarked that the new Acura TLX is a completely new model that offers innovative technologies that further connect the driver and the machine, He added that the new performance-luxury sedan is designed to deliver an experience that’s more intuitive and connected.

Wrapped in Acura Athletic Red Pearl finish, the new TLX Prototype boasts of an agile exterior, sports-sedan proportions and taut body surfaces. Its athleticism is underscored by its low and wide stance, purposeful character lines, dynamically sculpted fender arches as well as shorter front and rear overhangs. Its sculpted hood – featuring sharply creased bilateral ridgelines – strongly indicates the performance potential of the advanced new Acura powertrain.

Meanwhile, Acura's signature Jewel Eye headlamps – employing LED units -- help shape the face of the new TLX Prototype while illuminating the road ahead. Taking cues from these Jewel Eye headlamps are the prototype’s tailor-made side mirrors that feature a row of LED lights on their bases. Once the turn indicator is activated, the LED units light up at the bottom of the mirror.

The new 2015 Acura TLX rides on custom-designed five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 265/35ZR20 low-profile tires.

Acura TLX GT Race Car Unveiled At North American International Auto Show

Acura Motorsports today pulled the wraps off the new 2015 Acura TLX GT Race Car at the North American International Auto Show, announcing plans to move up to the GT category of the growing and highly competitive Pirelli World Challenge Championship.

To be campaigned by long time Acura Motorsports partner RealTime Racing, the new TLX GT will move Acura into the top category of the Pirelli World Challenge, facing competition that includes the Audi R8 LMS, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes SLS, Nissan GTR, Porsche 911 and Ferrari 458.

"The 2015 Acura TLX is a true luxury sport sedan, so it is fitting that the car be raced against several of its natural luxury competitors in the Pirelli World Challenge," said Art St. Cyr, President of Honda Performance Development and Vice President-Product Planning and Logistics, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Acura and Peter Cunningham's RealTime Racing organization have a long history of success together, and we look forward to adding to that tradition with the Acura TLX GT race car in 2014."

Developed from the production 2015 Acura TLX by HPD, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., the Acura TLX GT Race Car will feature HPD chassis and aerodynamic performance parts approved for Pirelli World Challenge competition, and will be powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine, developed by HPD from the normally aspirated, production TLX luxury sport sedan. The Acura TLX GT Race Car will be campaigned by Wisconsin-based RealTime Racing, the most successful team in Pirelli World Challenge history. Established in 1987 by owner/driver Peter Cunningham, RTR has raced and won with both Honda and Acura products. Since entering the Sports Car Club of America Pro Racing-sanctioned World Challenge series in 1993, the team has scored a record 85 race victories on its way to 14 Manufacturers' Championships and 14 Drivers' Championships.

"In our 27 years of racing Hondas and Acuras, we have developed a clear understanding of what it takes to win races and championships," RTR team principal Cunningham said. "In 2014, the Pirelli World Challenge GT class looks to be more competitive and diverse than at any time in the 25-year history of the series. RealTime has competed successfully in this category before, and we look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. With the onslaught of these world-class GT-3 competitors joining the fray, we will be working hard to develop the new TLX GT into a winning package. But that's what we love to do."
