2015 NAIAS Preview: 2016 Lexus GS F is the answer to the BMW M5

Article by Christian A., on January 7, 2015

This is it folks, Lexus has just unveiled the all-new 2016 GS F high-performance sedan and promised us that it will bring it to the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Just like the RC F, the new 2016 Lexus GS F is powered by the naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine that generates 467 hp at 7,100 rpm and 389 lb-ft (527 Nm) of torque at 4,800-5,600 rpm.

As expected, the engine is bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission. As standard, the GS F will arrive with Lexus’ innovative Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), featuring three operating modes: Standard, which provides a balance of agility and firmness; Slalom, emphasizing nimble steering response and agility; Track, which emphasizes control during high-speed circuit driving.

There are no details regarding the performances of the new vehicle, but we do expect it to be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 5.0 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 250 km/h or 155 mph. Using the same platform as the current GS 350 F Sport, the new Lexus GS F features structural reinforcements as well as a suspension exclusively designed in order to optimize the handling.

When it comes to design, the front end is dominated by the Lexus spindle grille, the big air intakes as well as by the impressive LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights.

From the side, we can see the 19-inch alloy wheels, stylish side skirts, while at the rear we find tinted taillights, a carbon fiber trunk lip spoiler, a new rear bumper with integrated air diffuser as well as four exhaust pipes.

The design process for the Lexus GS F ultimately considered high performance as a goal. With this in mind, designers allowed aerodynamics to shape the exterior of the GS F. Lexus had to get through several challenges to make the GS F aerodynamically efficient.

One of these involved the front tires, which are usually the main culprit for turbulent air that could increase drag as it flows through the car. To address this, Lexus employed special groove-shaped front fender liners to allow smoother airflow near the front section of the GS F.

In addition, the new Lexus GS F is fitted with specially designed undertrays that are located beneath the engine bay, as well as lateral trays that are placed beneath the midsection near the rocker panels to optimize airflow towards the rear differential. The new GS F is also fitted with a special undertray at the rear area that rises at an angle to serve as a rear diffuser. Moreover, aerodynamic stabilizing fins are found on different sections of the car’s panels, helping stem airflow turbulence while reducing drag.

Meanwhile, the front end of the new GS F is marked by an aggressive version of the brand’s signature spindle grille, which now comes with a special "F" series mesh as well as two wide and tall air inlets just below the headlights.

These apertures channel air into the ducting inside the grille for optimized levels of brake cooling. Likewise, the grille comes with a new carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) lower molding that generates more downforce for the front section. The car features wide front fender flares with large air outlets that draw out excess airflow. The new GS F also boasts of broad fenders and sculpted rocker panels for a more muscular appearance.

On the other hand, the side view of the new GS F is marked by aerodynamically shaped side mirrors as well as B-pillar trim sections finished in glossy dark metallic paint that contrasts the body color. The new GS F could be availed with bright orange-colored front and rear brake calipers emblazoned with the Lexus "F" logo. Lexus is also offering lightweight hand-polished 19-inch multi-spoke forged aluminum wheels wrapped with low-profile 255/35ZR19 front tires and 275/35ZR19 rear rubbers.
