Infiniti will reveal new flagship sedan concept in Detroit

Article by Christian A., on November 21, 2017

As the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is fast approaching, we expect to see an exciting array of concept cars and production vehicles from various brands. One of these automakers would be Infiniti and according to reports, the Japanese automaker will be bringing in a performance EV concept once the doors open to the Cobo Center in January. Apart from that, we are also expecting a second flagship sedan that will join the concept.

Alfonso Albaisa, who is the head of design for Infiniti, mentioned in his interview with Car and Driver, that the new and improved QX80 will have a very high level of luxury. The new QX80 will have an active suspension; it also reportedly will use open-pore wood.

Of course, it will also have a ton of luxurious features, befitting of a flagship SUV. Though he didn’t only talk about SUVs in his interview. He also mentioned that Infiniti will be having a brand-new flagship sedan concept at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It will act as a preview of the future production version on a flagship four-door that we will see in the lineup in a couple of years or so.

It has been a while since Infiniti introduced their last flagship sedan, the Q45 in 2006. And in a little after ten years, we will finally see another one. Furthermore, he mentioned that we should not expect just any regular looking sedan, and that it will be extra stunning. In fact, they are referring to it as a sexy sedan instead of a straight sedan, and it will have similarities with modern four-door coupes.

The concept we are about to see at the Detroit Auto Show is going to be the company’s second “sexy sedan”. The very first one would be the Q80 Inspiration concept that they introduced back in 2014. It was a four-door luxury sedan that never reached the production line. Moreover, we could expect two more halo vehicles that will be positioned on top of the range.

Like many automakers today, Nissan’s luxury marque seems to be focusing on developing crossovers and SUVs. This is because buyers have been showing more interest in high-riding vehicles over sedans. However, that does not mean that the sedan segment will die, not very soon at least. In fact, Infiniti sees an opportunity in that segment, which is also why they are introducing the sexy sedan. Let us hope that Infiniti’s new sedan lures customers to start buying sedans again, and also to inspire other automakers to design better-looking sedans.
