Mercedes-Benz teases 2018 GLA compact SUV with single image of its front end

Following its announcement that a mid-cycle refresh of the Mercedes-Benz GLA will be unveiled on January 9, at the upcoming 2017 Detroit Auto Show, the German premium carmaker has provided a little teaser on what is in store for us in the days to come.

Even before this teaser, there have been numerous spy photos featuring the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA. While not camouflaged, the spied 2018 Mercedes GLA has been covered with foils. This means we could only base our descriptions on the surfaces and lines of the spied compact SUV.

Basically, the spied Mercedes GLA only tells us about its overall dimensions and profile. As for the smaller details, there are very few revealed. Since the 2018 GLA is a mid-cycle update, we could expect Mercedes to implement a facelift on its compact premium SUV.

Now, Mercedes’ little teaser for the 2018 GLA only involves a lone image of the compact SUV. In particular, it shows the front end of the 2018 GLA, with some parts darkened out to blend with the black background. The teaser image was clear enough to provide us a glimpse of the changes made on the grille, the front bumper and the front fog lights. As far as the headlights are concerned, it wasn’t clear on the teaser image whether there were changes or not. However, just like the mid-cycle updates made on the Mercedes A-Class, CLA, and CLA Shooting Brake, the facelift implemented on the 2018 GLA should include minor cosmetic changes on the headlights and on the taillights.

Further exterior changes on the 2018 Mercedes GLA are expected to be minor, both on the front and the rear ends. Most likely, Mercedes will offer new wheel design options as well as new exterior color choices for the latest iteration of the GLA. As for the interior of the 2018 GLA, we could expect no major revisions, although minor tweaks are expected like the availability of the latest infotainment system, interior colors and trims as well as some cabin options. For now, we could only speculate until the German premium finally unveils the full form of the 2018 Mercedes GLA at the Detroit Auto Show in the United States.

The US-bound 2018 Mercedes GLA will be offered in three flavors: the front-wheel drive GLA250, the all-wheel drive GLA250 4Matic, and the all-wheel drive GLA45 AMG. The first two versions will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that delivers 208 hp (155 kW) of output at 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm (258 lb.-ft.) of torque available between 1,200 rpm and 4,000 rpm.

The GLA250 AMG, meanwhile, will be powered by an AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine that delivers 355 hp (265 kW) of output at 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm (332 lb.-ft.) of torque available between 2,250 rpm and 5,000 rpm.
