Bentley has unveiled the Continental GT Speed Convertible, its new open-top performance flagship, at the North American International Auto Show. Bentley also revealed that its worldwide sales have increased by 22%. It also confirmed that the Americas region is still Bentley’s top market.
The new GT Speed Convertible offers the enjoyment of roof-down luxury touring with the incredible performance of a 625 PS (616 bhp) twin-turbocharged 6.0 litre W12, while resulting to a 15% boost in fuel economy. Acceleration is enhanced while handling becomes sharper and more responsive due to its close-ratio eight-speed transmission, uprated and lowered suspension and retuned steering. These revisions do not compromise the ride comfort of Bentley’s Continental convertible.
No matter what the road conditions are, optimum traction and power delivery are guaranteed by permanent all-wheel drive. The new GT Speed Convertible is at the top of the Bentley Continental range with a maximum speed of 202 mph (325 km/h). Like we’ve come to expect of Bentley, this unparalleled performance became possible without sacrificing craftsmanship, luxury or refinement. Some of its subtle sporting style features are its exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels, dark-tint grilles and ‘rifled’ exhaust tail pipes.
GT Speed Convertible has a handcrafted cabin that comes with the Mulliner Driving Specification as standard, combining contemporary luxury with a uniquely sporting quality. Those who visited the Detroit show also saw the Continental GT V8. The Continental GT and its GT Convertible are equipped with a new 4.0 litre, twin turbocharged V8, enabling the car to meet outstanding standards when it comes to power-to-emissions in the high luxury sports car segment.
The new engine offers a maximum power of 507 PS (500 bhp / 373 Kw) at 6000 rev/min and an excellent peak torque of 660 Nm (487 lb ft) which is offered throughout the entire rev range. As a result, the car can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the GT coupe can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).
Bentley’s Continental GT Speed convertible boasts an exterior that can be distinguished by its matrix radiator grille as well as its bumper air intakes in dark-tint chrome finish. It also has unique 21-inch Speed alloy wheels that come in silver or optional dark tint. Moreover, large, elliptical exhaust tailpipes sport a rifled interior. A subtle design touch is also revealed when you open the bonnet, with black inlet manifold that is unique to the Bentley Continental Speed models. Meanwhile, the GT Speed coupé has a winged 'B' badge that is set upon a black enamel background and crowns the radiator shell.
The Continental GT Speed Convertible’s front wings are made from superformed aluminium, with crisply defined body creases and seamless form that creates an impression of muscularity and tension. Its 10-mm lower suspension and its unique 21-inch wheels accentuate the car’s low, wide, and poised stance. Additional spoilers are unnecessary despite its supercar performance as the gentle lip found on the double-horseshoe bootlid already generates all the downforce it needs, even at over 325 km/h or 200 mph.
As for its interior, the car has exclusive treadplates that feature the 'Speed' legend and that welcome you to a 4-seat cabin. The cabin features the Mulliner Driving Specification’s hand-craftsmanship, with its diamond-quilted hide upholstery. For Bentley’s Continental GT Speed models, the carmaker offers an exclusive 'engine spin' Dark Tint Aluminium finish, taking inspiration from the dashboards of Le Mans winning Bentleys in the 1920s. Its understated shade perfectly complements the dark tint chrome radiator of the exterior as well as of the bumper grilles. Other finish options include a range of fine wood veneers, as well as satin-finish Carbon Fiber for the fascia and the center console.
