Cadillac ATS to make its official debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Article by Christian A., on December 5, 2011

General Motors’ product chief Mary Barra said that the Cadillac ATS luxury compact will be unveiled at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. This rear-drive sedan, which GM intends to launch in the second half of 2012, is included in the four production or concept vehicles that will have their worldwide debut during the Detroit show.

Barra, who was at an Automotive Press Association event, didn't say what the other three models are.

She said that the ATS is a critical part of its Cadillac strategy, saying that it is one of the largest segments in the global luxury industry whether it’s from a volume or an importance perspective.

The ATS is expected to compete against the BMW 3 series and other well-established models in the compact luxury market like the Mercedes C class and the Audi A4.

Barra said that German cars dominate the compact luxury segment but she believes that GM has come up with a “compelling and convincing new challenger." The GM plant in Lansing, Mich., will produce the ATS beside the CTS coupe, sedan and wagon.

2013 Cadillac ATS makes use of the car brand’s Art & Science style philosophy, utilizing new proportions and customizing the signature refinement and design cues for the smallest Cadillac while also improving on the high level of attention to technology and detail element that Cadillac is famous for.

New ATS has a long wheelbase that measures 109.3 inches while the wide rear and front tracks give the car the look of being firmly stable. This appearance is further underlined by the tight sheet metal and short overhangs. You have 17-inch wheels as standard but you can opt for the 18-inch ones.

You also have daring vertical lighting elements, such as the LED front lights and the illuminated door handles and grille shutters. This helps the ATS look more advanced and modern while also serving a function for the car. The grille shutters also close when you drive at certain speeds to lower the drag and improve fuel efficiency.

The interior is made for the driver and makes use of technology and finely crafted elements to augment the exterior design as well as help give you the full ATS experience. All elements in the interior are designed to make driving intuitive and effortless, including the position of the pedals and the location of the shifter. You can also opt for performance seats that have adjustable bolsters for better lateral support.

The intuitive feel of the interior is also helped by the instrument panel that extends toward the doors plus the center stack that seamlessly blends with the center console. The console and the doors also have functional LED lighting for the instrument clusters that helps you see the instruments no matter what the lighting condition is. You also have ambient lights.

Cadillac ATS also uses real wood, carbon fiber trim, and metal plates to help you build a connection with the vehicle. You can opt for several color themes for the inside. Each of these themes has their own trim materials and can satisfy a wide assortment of tastes.
