Detroit Auto Show also saw the introduction of the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, an open-top version of the well-known coupe which promises to attract even more people to the Italian brand. Just like the coupe version, the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is powered by the all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged direct injection, dual intercooler four-cylinder engine that produces 237 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque available from 1,700 rpm.
Bolted to the Alfa TCT (twin-clutch transmission), which delivers the power to the rear wheels, the 4C Spider is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds, while top speed is 160 mph or 257.5 km/h. The design is not surprising at all as we’ve seen the 4C Coupe.
Still, the 4C Spider received some additional features such as sculpted air intakes on the sides, a removable and stowable cloth roof or an optional carbon fiber hardtop, redesigned headlights and a new deck lid with three heat extractors. Four new alloy wheel designs will be available with sizes ranging from 17- to 19-inches, hiding silver, black, red or yellow brake calipers.
In addition, seven exterior exterior colours will be available, including the Rosso Alfa, Black, White, Basalt Grey Metallic, Rosso Competizione Tri-coat, Madreperla White Tri-coat and all-new Giallo (yellow).
The interior offers six colour combinations. Compared with the coupe version, the weight of the 4C Spider increased only by 22 lbs (10 kg).
Alfa Romeo will offer a standard exhaust system but if you want more, you can have the racing exhaust system, which features integrated dual concentric exhaust tips. If this isn’t enough, Alfa Romeo offers the all-new Akrapovic dual-mode exhaust system (late availability).
The titanium-made Akrapovic exhaust consists of two center-mounted tailpipes, computer-optimized asymmetrical mufflers with a dual-mode exhaust valve system and link pipe with resonator to eliminate in-cabin droning.
If you want to maximize the vehicle’s handling performance, the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is available with the Track Package, which includes high-performance shock absorbers with larger front- and rear-sway bards, 18-inch forged-aluminum wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero “AR Racing” tires, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with microfiber inserts, carbon fiber exterior mirrors, carbon fiber gauge cluster bezel, as well as Black leather performance seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.
The all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider offers great levels of agility and road-holding performance, thanks to a number of race-derived solutions. In the front, the 4C Spider employs a "superimposed" double wishbone suspension for a more direct feedback, while at the rear, the car uses an advanced MacPherson suspension for superb road-holding. Both suspension systems are made from aluminum and high-strength steel. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider bound for the North American market comes with stiffer springs, re-tuned shock absorbers as well as larger front- and rear-sway bars.
New Alfa Romeo 4C Spider customers could avail of the Track Package for optimal handling performance, as this package includes high-performance shock absorbers with larger sway bars on the front and rear, with available Pirelli P-Zero "AR Racing" tires.
It also includes carbon fiber exterior mirrors and carbon fiber gauge cluster bezel. The package likewise includes performance flat-bottom steering wheel with microfiber inserts. This package is available with Black leather performance seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.
Since the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is designed to achieve high levels of agility and road feel, it doesn’t feature a conventional power steering system. Instead, it is provided with a manual steering system and 15.7:1 quick-ratio steering. As made possible by the lightweight nature of the 4C Spider, it maintains an appropriate steering-wheel load. In addition, the new 4C Spider boasts of up to 1.25 g of braking deceleration
