The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG was not the only surprise from the 2015 Detroit Auto Show as Daimler also took the wraps off the new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe 4Matic. Seen as the perfect rival for the BMW X6 M, the GLE 63 Coupe 4Matic uses a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that generates 557 hp (410 kW) at 5750 rpm and 700 Nm of torque, between 1750 and 5500 rpm.
The vehicle is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph. If you want a more powerful version, Mercedes-AMG offers the GLE 63 S Coupe 4Matic, which uses the same engine boosted to 585 hp (430 kW) at 5500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque, between 1750 and 5250 rpm.
As a result, the vehicle needs just 4.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph), while top speed is 250 km/h or 155 mph. Both models have a fuel consumption of 11.9 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions are 279 g/km. The engine is bolted to the well-known 7-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission.
What’s more interesting is that the vehicle arrives with the M button, allowing the driver to shift gears exclusively using the steering-wheel shift paddles. Power is delivered to the wheels via the 4Matic all-wheel drive system with rear-biased power distribution. When it comes to design, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe is the first SUV from the company to adopt the AMG design philosophy with the characteristic “A-wing”.
The A-wing is painted in the colour of the vehicle, while the trim strip is in silver chrome. “V8 BITURBO” badges are located behind the wheel cutout, while the AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels (21-inch) provide a superior look. The rear end resembles the S-Class Coupe and features narrow taillights as well as the broad chrome badge.
Meanwhile, the GLE 63 S Coupe is even more impressive and features the A-wing painted in high-gloss black, a silver-chrome trim strip and black flics. Moreover, the model arrives with 22-inch AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, red-painted brake calipers as well as the GLE 63 badge which bears a special “S”.
Same sporty theme is found at the interior, thwew the GLE 63 Coupe offers sports seats with excellent lateral support, a flat-bottomed 3-spoke Performance steering wheel, silver aluminum shift paddles and aluminum pedals. Two large round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4 cm (4.4-inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information.
The 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system of the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe employs a specially designed transfer case that could distribute the drive power in a distribution ratio of 40 percent to the front and 60 percent to the rear, resulting to greater agility on its vertical axis. This configuration delivers greater driving pleasure during high-speed cornering.
Meanwhile, the AMG Ride Control sports suspension with Airmatic package – featuring air suspension, special damper struts, ADS Plus and automatic level control -- is combined with Active Curve System active roll stabilization. Fitted as standard, this system makes use of active anti-roll bars on both axles to reduce the roll angle of the body during cornering. With superb cornering attributes and reduced body roll angle, the AMG GLE 63 Coupe offers improved levels of transverse dynamics and driving pleasure as well as driving stability and safety at higher speeds.
Since roll stabilization, damping as well as suspension adapts automatically to the current driving situation, optimal levels of ride comfort and stability are achieved. The vehicle’s damping system modifies its area of emphasis according to the preselected Dynamic Select mode: "Sport Plus" emphasizes maximum possible transverse dynamics while "Comfort" mode allows for maximum ride comfort.
New GLE 63 Coupe features a speed-sensitive fully load-bearing air suspension system that could lower the body at higher speeds, thereby reducing drag while increasing stability. To detect the prevailing operating conditions, the vehicle employs a steering angle sensor, three body sensors, four level sensors. The conditions are also detected through the vehicle, and the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator. According to the conditions, the control unit variably adjusts the current damping force for each individual wheel.
Thanks to the perfect interplay between all systems, the driver delivers superb levels experience in any driving situation or road condition. Interestingly, Dynamic Select alters driving dynamics at lightning speed, depending on the activated transmission mode. In "Comfort" mode, the control limits of the ASR dynamic handling control systems, ESP with Dynamic Cornering Assist and the 4ETS all-wheel drive control system are configured to deliver moderate, controlled dynamics. On the other hand, "Sport" and "Sport Plus" allows greater longitudinal and transverse dynamics, thereby delivering more intense driving experience.
