Very few details about the new Infiniti Q50 have been released but to whet our appetite before it’s previewed at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, a video has been made public. Infiniti design boss, Shiro Nakamura, said that the Q50, the replacement for the G-series saloon, will be “much sportier and more dynamic” than the existing car.
The teaser video indicates a heavily sculpted headlight, which has a close resemblance to the Infiniti LE concept that was seen at the New York motor show last year. This model will then be promoted as an upscale version of the Nissan LEAF. However, the Q50 is being targeted at the BMW 3-series and Audi A4.
Infiniti has said previously that the Q50 will be powered by Mercedes-sourced four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
The Q50 will also be the first new model to have Infiniti's new naming structure, which seeks to offer more clarity to its model ranges. After the Infiniti Q50 is previewed in Detroit, it will be seen next in Europe at the Geneva motor show before it starts selling in the autumn.
In developing the Q50, Infiniti made it a point to make no compromises. This was applied not only on the design but also includes the performance targets and the innovation.
Because of this, the team in charge of development was able to go beyond the limits of what people expect from a sports sedan. Once it is launched in North America, Infiniti said that it will offering two cutting-edge powertrains. Once the Q50 will be released later in the year to other markets around the world, the brand will be making available other engine choices.
One of these will be the 24-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy 3.7-liter V6 engine which can deliver an estimated 328 hp with estimated peak torque of 269 lb.-ft. This engine will have both the Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL) and the Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). A hybrid powertrain will be offered as well. This will have the Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system that has the Intelligent Dual Clutch Control. Powering it is the lithium-ion battery with a compact laminated design having that one-motor/two-clutch motor control.
This is then combined with the 24-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy 3.5-liter V6 engine. The 50-kW electric motor has an estimated output of 67 hp with estimated maximum torque at 199 lb.-ft. For the V6 engine it is paired to, power is about 296 hp with torque around 255 lb.-ft. This means that hybrid system has around 354 hp of new power and thus allows it to have that excellent acceleration with exceptional fuel economy.
According to de Nysschen, the Q50 is able to intensify what every driver wants when it comes to enjoying being behind the wheel and performance. He added that the brand has a hybrid engine that not only offers the fastest acceleration but is considered to have fuel efficiency that is at the top of the class.
He went on to say that the Q50 is fitted with cutting-edge performance technologies and equipped with safety technologies that are able to detect and then react even before the driver is able to do so. Further, de Nysschen continued, the brand also has the precise and quick Direct Adaptive Steering technology, a first in the world.
