The mystery surrounding the Toyobaru sportscars is unraveling slowly but the pace has been picking up lately with the unveiling of the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru’s unveiling of the first true concept version of the RWD model (which doesn’t have a transparent body) at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. But then, consumers are likely to be more concerned if the BRZ handles well instead of how its looks.
The BRZ STI Concept was displayed at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. After the parade of concepts, the scheduled unveiling of a production-spec version at the Tokyo Motor Show is highly anticipated by people who want to know if Subaru can build an excellent rear-wheel drive car.
SubaruBRZForum said that the debut at the U.S. market is set to take place in January 2012 at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. It hasn’t really been announced how the US-spec models will differ from those offered in other countries.
It’s believed that the European version is powered by a 2.0-liter boxer engine that could deliver 213hp. As a result, the vehicle can go from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.0 seconds and it can hit a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). The base BRZ, which costs $25,300, will go on sale in the spring of 2012, hinting that we’d have to be patient some more for the STI.
The new Subaru BRZ comes with a sports car design that spontaneously conveys its fun-to-drive character. This design also allows the new BRZ to be easily recognizable as a Subaru. Front end elements that also identify the new BRZ as a Subaru are the Subaru six-star ornament, headlights and hexagon lower grille. Since the new Subaru BRZ is gifted with an "ultra-low center of gravity package," it could don a low hood design.
This low hood as well as its bulging front fenders properly conveys the drivability of the BRZ. Its sides, meanwhile, are marked by shapely fender flares that augment the BRZ’s elegant gorgeousness. The sides of the new BRZ are laden with functional elements that could enhance aerodynamics through areas like the C-pillar shape, trunk lid layout and rear glass inclination.
As a sports car, the new Subaru BRZ features short front and rear overhangs as well as a front fender laden with characteristic garnish. The rear end of the new Subaru BRZ feature prominent rear wheel arches that highlight the elegance and beauty of its posterior. Subaru continued the detailed beauty of the exterior into the interior, featuring stylish elements to allow a new level of fun-to-drive experience wherein the driver and vehicle become one.
For instance, Subaru reduced the size of the steering wheel to achieve sports car maneuverability and placed the tachometer – featuring a digitally displayed speedometer -- in the center of the gauges to allow drivers to glance at important data without having to completely take their eyes off the road.
Likewise, the interior new Subaru BRZ features bespoke sports car seats with lowered sitting positions that match the "ultra-low center of gravity package." Powering the new Subaru BRZ is the new-generation Boxer engine that has been developed just for the sports car. This high-output yet very efficient engine exhibits the high revving nature of a naturally aspirated sports engine.
