2009 Frankfurt Motor Show: Peugeot iOn

Peugeot will be launching the "Zero Emissions" iOn at the Frankfurt Motor Show towards the later part of 2010. The Lion Brand has a strong history when it comes to electric cars as it is a pioneer in this field and is expected to continue being a major force in the market for electric vehicles.

From 1995 to 2003, the brand has sold 106 units and remains to be the only one to have sold the most number of "zero-emissions" cars worldwide. iOn utilizes lithium-ion batteries giving it an operating range of 130 km while ensuring a good response when it comes to mobility in urban settings and maintaining a good respect for its surroundings and the environment.

The launch will be the first time the iOn will be shown to the public. By the time it is launched, the iOn will be one of the first electric vehicles to do so in Europe. After its launch, Peugeot will be developing this model in partnership with the Mitsubishi Motor Company.

The main goal is to target retail like individuals, and fleet customers which can include large companies, authorities, and local organizations, among others. The reason why it is effective for this target market is because it is fit for use in any kind of urban environment. Its lithium-ion batteries can be fully charged in merely six hours though an 80% recharge is possible in just thirty minutes. As such, it makes the town become one’s favorite playground.

With its four seats and four doors, the iOn’s length measures 3.48 meters while the turning circle stands at 4.50 meters. Maximum power is at 47 kW, or about 64 bph, with maximum torque at 180 Nm. Performance remains consistent with 130 km/h of maximum speed and the standard European cycle of 130 km.

All that’s needed to fully recharge its lithium-ion car batteries is a standard 220-volt socket and six hours. However since it uses the fast charging system, it is possible to recharge 80% of the battery’s capacity in half-an-hour. The impressive level of versatility in this environment-friendly city car is owing to its specifications. It’s also why its level of comfort and performance is similar to those of small vehicles with the usual combustion engine.

However, the compact size, respect of the environment, ease of operation, and safety are not the only features that make it the best. The interior has state-of-the-art services like the "localised communication unit." What it does is it activates the emergency call system which gives the location of the vehicle in the event of an accident and informs the appropriate emergency services. Peugeot has long been known to run the emergency call system given that it has a number deployed all across Europe.

The second reason why the "localised communication unit" is an amazing service is because it allows data transfer like the current status of the battery, the distance covered by the car, and the distance travelled prior to maintenance, among many others.

Because of this, it makes it easy to manage even fleet vehicles. The iOn offers a number of solutions to meet the needs when it comes to urban mobility. This is a clear sign of Peugeot's environmental strategy while strengthening the brand’s guarantee to incorporate this new automotive edition.

The iOn also symbolizes one of the most significant components of the company’s strategy to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and lowering environmental footprint. Starting from its launch in 2010, the iOn will offer customers additional solutions for this particular model range.

While the iOn will be offered starting at the end of 2010, the 3008 HYbrid4 meanwhile will arrive by the spring of 2011. The 3008 HYbrid4 comes equipped with a wide range of technologies. It has a 4-wheel drive, an engine that delivers 147 kW (200 bhp) of power, with CO2 emissions lowered to 99 g/km.

Once these products are released, it will be able to round out the series of combustion engines that includes engines that offer even higher performance. It will come with the diesel HDi FAP variant and the petrol variant, both with the VTi and the THP technology. The engines have been placed well for their segment with emissions of 106 g/km for the 107, 99 g/km for the 207, 120 g/km for the 308, 130 g/km for the 3008, and 129 g/km for the 407.

The new Peugeot electric car

The new Peugeot electric car: iOn "Zero Emissions" Peugeot, the pioneer and 1st worldwide manufacturer of electric vehicles will be launching the ion at the end of 2010. Its performance and 130 km operating range is obtained in particular due to the use of lithium-ion batteries, which will provide an efficient response to the challenges of urban mobility and respect for the environment. With the ion, which will be presented to the world for the 1st time at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Peugeot is incorporating the latest automotive edition into its model range. With the 106 produced between 1995 and 2003, Peugeot, the pioneer in electric vehicles, remains to this day the manufacturer having sold the most "zero-emissions" cars in the world. Supported by this history, the Lion Brand intends to continue as a major player in the new market of electric vehicles.

Therefore, from the end of 2010, Peugeot will be amongst the first to launch a new all-electric vehicle in Europe: the iOn. From launch, this electric vehicle developed in cooperation with Mitsubishi Motor Company (MMC), is aimed at both retail and fleet customers (authorities, local organisations and large companies, etc.) due its specifications which are particularly suited for use in an urban environment. Lithium-ion batteries rechargeable in six hours and 80% recharged within thirty minutes The town will therefore be the favourite playground of the iOn. With four doors and four seats, a length of 3.48 m and a turning circle of 4.50 m, this all-electric Peugeot vehicle will develop a maximum power output of 47 kW (64 bhp) and a torque of 180 Nm, thus offering reliable levels of performance (maximum speed of 130 km/h). These specifications allow this "zero-emission" city car to offer a good level of versatility, comparable in performance and comfort to a small conventional combustion engine vehicle. Its respect for the environment par excellence, its compact size, safety and simple operation will be its best, but by no means only attributes. In fact, onboard it will also include some innovative services, thanks in particular to the "localised communication unit". This unit not only authorises the emergency call system for which Peugeot is a leader in terms of deployment throughout Europe (location of vehicles at the time of an accident and triggering the dispatch of suitable emergency services) but also authorises data transfer (battery status, distance covered, distance to travel before maintenance is due, etc.) thus providing assistance in the business management of fleet vehicles.

A further illustration of the brand's environmental strategy Ion illustrates Peugeot's commitment to integrate the new automotive edition by offering lots of solutions suited to the different needs of urban mobility. This car also represents one of the key factors of the Brand's strategy to reduce the environmental footprint and dependence on fossil fuels. As such, from the end of 2010 onwards, customers will discover some additional solutions within the model range: The iOn coming at the end of 2010, is an all-electric vehicle for everyday urban use. The 3008 HYbrid4, arriving in spring 2011, will be equipped with technology offering a versatile range of use (147 kW / 200 bhp, 4-wheel drive, etc, with CO2 emissions reduced to 99g/km).

These products will complete a range of combustion engines with some even higher performance engine units in both diesel HDi FAP and petrol variants (VTi and THP technology); engines which are already particularly well placed in their respective segments: 107 with 106 g/km of CO2, 207 with 99g, 308 with 120g, 3008 with 130g and 407 with 129g .
