Today at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled one of the most widely anticipated cars in its history – the BMW i8.
On most levels, this plug-in hybrid 2+2 sports car is unlike any car ever introduced. It was also announced that the 2014 BMW i8 will have a manufacturer’s suggest retail price of $135,700 plus destination and handling when it arrives in US showrooms in the spring of 2014.
This is before any federal or state incentives are applied. BMW’s i model series is based on pure-bred vehicle concepts accounting for sustainability within the value chain and complemented with both mobility services and a newer understanding of what premium is.
The BMW i8 is the second model released under the series and along with the plug-in hybrid drive system, it also has a passenger cell that is composed of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and an aluminum frame where the electric motor, combustion engine, a battery pack, and suspension are positioned.
Along with this novel concept, the aerodynamic body design gives the BMW i8 a dynamic and efficient version of what BMW has come to be known for. By focusing on BMW’s premium character and sustainability, the i8 shows the extensive spread and the universal appeal of the BMW philosophy.
As early as 2007, BMW had started research and development on this series. This would later become the foundation of a visionary car that considers not just the economic impact but the environmental effects and social change as well.
In addition to the conceptual work and technological development, BMW also conducted research on how pure-electric cars perform in everyday conditions. The research has resulted in more than 1,000 people participating and getting more than 32 million kilometers of driving. The result of all these studies can now be seen in the i8 which is both an innovative vehicle concept and mobility solution.
The Bmw i8 has these dimensions: length of 4,689 mm, a width of 1,942 mm and a height of 1,293 mm, but also a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, while the drag coefficient (Cd value) is 0.26.
It has an outstanding lift/drag ratio because of the well honed air flow throughout all parts of the vehicle body, leading to amazing driving dynamics and stability. This model’s weight distribution is very ideal. In fact, its lithium-ion battery pack is positioned at the center of the vehicle, slightly forward of the mid-point. This is the perfect location for the battery with regards to crash safety as it is protected by aluminum housing.
