Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept was unveiled today and is headed to the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). The new concept car previews another customer sport racing car from Mercedes-AMG. The CLA 45 AMG Racing Series is destined for the crowd-pulling race series featuring 2.0-litre turbocharged cars and if there is enough demand it may be deployed internationally.
Still, the engine output and power transmission are variable, with permanent all-wheel drive or purely front-wheel drive possible as in the standard version. As expected, the racing version of the CLA comes with a special suspension, has a wider track at the front and rear and allows numerous adjustments for an individual racetrack setup.
The suspension level, spring rate and damper characteristics are adjustable, just like the track and camber at the front and rear axles. Moreover, the racing car features an AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated discs all-round and is equipped with an anti-lock system. A new body kit was also installed and consists of a new front and rear apron, flared wings and side sill panels.
In addition, treadless racing tyres ensure an impressive width. Inside, we find a roll-over cage made of high-strength steel, Recaro sport bucket seats and integrated fire extinguishing system. The racing steering wheel with shift paddles for gearshifts allows perfect vehicle control.
A quick look at the technical data for the freshly-minted CLA45 AMG reveals that the AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine, with an optimal production of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton meters of torque, is the most potent turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production at any point in the world.
The fusion of maximum production and torque, along with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, grants the CLA45 AMG driving attributes nearly in line with that of a sportscar. The performance coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and its best speed is pegged at 250 km/h (electronically limited).
Not only is the AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine spectacular as far as its dynamic performance, it is also exceptional with regard to its effectiveness and environmental capacity. The all-new CLA45 AMG accomplishes a fuel consumption level of 6.9 liters for every 100 kilometers according to NEDC consolidated figures, while it already meets the EU6 emissions standard that only comes into realization in 2015 as well as the limit for the particle count per kilometer of 6 × 1011 part/km that will be required in 2017.
The reason for these exceptional numbers is the use of the cutting-edge package which has been assembled by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance engine being associated with the BlueDIRECT family, the four-cylinder turbo engine promotes spray-guided direct petrol injection by means of piezo injectors situated centrally in the four combustion chambers.
The fusion of various fuel injection and spark ignitions enhances fuel usage and thermodynamic effectiveness significantly, prompting lower exhaust emissions. Other features are the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminum crankcase, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, weight-optimized crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimized piston rings, air cooling, ECO start/stop function, air-water charge, and generator management.
