Audi officially announced that the 2014 A3 Cabriolet will be officially introduced on September 8 and the public debut will be made next week at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Although it didn’t give us too many details, Audi described the new A3 Cabriolet using three words: sporty, elegant and versatile. Regarding the design, the new A3 Cabriolet will captivate with its flowing lines and soft top.
Moreover, the open-top version of the A3 will be at the top of its class technically, with systematic lightweight design, new engines, and high-performance assistance systems plus more versatile and faster networking thanks to LTE technology.
The A3 Cabrio is expected to use the same engines found on the standard model, such as the 1.4-liter TFSI with 140 hp or the bigger 1.8-liter TFSI with 180 hp. Diesel engines will also be used and we are talking about the 2.0-liter TDI with 150 hp or 184 hp.
While the new A3 Cabriolet already shows an exceptional design, Audi made sure to complement this with a soft cloth top. This top is extended over a kinematic mechanism and as it is composed of magnesium-steel, is also lightweight. Electro-hydraulically controlled, the top can be closed or opened in under 18 seconds with just the touch of a button.
This can be done even if the A3 Cabriolet is running at 31.07 mph, which is about 50 km/h. When in an opened position, the top folds into three layers and is placed on a tray. Even then it has little or no impact on the 10.14-cubic feet (287 liters) capacity of the luggage. In addition to offering better comfort, the new A3 Cabriolet is larger compared to the previous version.
Yet with the base version having a curb weight of only 3,009.31 lbs. (1,365 kg), this meant that the newer model is lighter by 110.23 lbs. (50 kg). In addition, the body-in-white is lighter by 66.14 lbs. (30 kg) compared to the previous A3 Cabriolet, and this already includes the special reinforcements aimed at offering high torsional stiffness.
Even the hood of the engine is composed of aluminum. Helping in making this new model lighter, the brand also lowered the weight of the engines and interior. All of these mean that while Audi is already a pioneer when it comes to the technical field, the new A3 Cabriolet sets what may be the best value when it comes to the compact class.
For the exterior, Audi will be offering a choice of 16 colors for the body of this new model. Fitted as standard is the soft top, which is fully automatic. It also has a glass window in the rear. This soft top is colored in black. An acoustic top that is fully automatic is offered as an option. Those who decide to have the acoustic top will see that the inner foam layer is thicker and as such, it lowers further the noise level on the interior.
For this special top, Audi will be offering three colors which are Black, Brown, and Gray. Regardless of the color, the roofliner will either be in lunar silver or black. Under the Ambiente trim line, a wind deflector is included as standard with the head-level heating an option offered for the front seats. Should a rollover accident occur, occupants are protected with the active rollover protection system which utilizes a pair of spring-loaded plates placed deep in the vehicle’s body.
