Kia’s unnamed extended hot hatch concept to be unveiled at 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

South Korean carmaker Kia Motors has announced that it would be unveiling a new concept car at the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. As Kia disclosed, the concept car – still unnamed up to this moment and will likely be so until its official reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show – would provide a glimpse into the possible design and appearance of the third generation of its Kia Cee’d compact car.

The last time we checked, the Kia Cee’d – a compact car especially made for European customers – is still on its second generation. The first generation Cee’d lasted for six years while the second generation has been on the market since 2012, which means that the third-generation compact car is up for introduction soon. The original Cee’d was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show while the second-gen model was unwrapped in the 2012 edition of the event. It was named after the initials of the European Economic Community (EEC or CEE in some places) and European Design (ED). Kia, however, determined that CEEED would have too many Es, so the last E was replaced with an apostrophe mark, resulting to the Cee’d moniker.

However, Kia has made it clear that that the still unnamed concept car to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show would be just a design study indicating the possible looks of the next generation of the Cee’d. Should the South Korean carmaker decide to unveil the third generation of the Kia Cee’d next year – or six years after the debut of the second-gen compact car – it could happen at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the event that introduced the first two generations of the Cee’d.

Interestingly, Kia is already dropping some juicy information about the still unnamed concept car. The study would be an extended hot hatch, an entirely new term even for the auto industry. According to the carmaker, this new body type would feature the athleticism of the current pro_cee’d, a three-door model from Kia. Likewise, the still unnamed concept car would boast of not just real-world versatility, but also of stunning looks – as re-imagined for a new generation of drivers.

Kia has already provided an image of the still unnamed concept car. Its front end isn't visible and we could only glimpse at its shadowy rear end and its sculpted sides. As it appears, the still unnamed concept car seems to be a fastback model. It doesn’t have B-pillars, which could translate to better access to both front and rear cabins. In addition, the door handles of the concept car sit flush with the body. The concept car also has no side mirrors. As the image shows, the unnamed concept has lowered suspension, pronounced wheel arches, short overhangs as well as full-width rear lights.

Kia is expected to reveal the concept car, its name and other details on Sept. 12, 2017 at its stand in Hall 9 of the Frankfurt Messe exhibition center.
