Toyota gives hints of hybrid C-HR, new Land Cruiser ahead of 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

Article by Christian A., on September 1, 2017

It is already September and we are all excited about the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, more so because automakers have been revealing previews and teasers (online) of models and concepts that will make their debut at the auto show. Today, it is Toyota that teases us with two new crossovers: the Hybrid C-HR Concept and the new Land Cruiser.

The C-HR Hy-Power Concept is a representation of possible additions for its compact crossover’s engine range. Toyota is being a tease, only providing few details about the vehicle, and that is the crossover’s license plate and lower fascia. Having said that, it makes us think that the model has been given a change in terms of design. And during a press release, the company’s spokesperson did say that the people behind Toyota’s European Design Center will give the C-HR a little bit of facelift to emphasize its emotional and powerful look, while hinting that they will be expanding the company’s hybrid powertrain line. That is all we got from the Hybrid C-HR Concept, and that’s sad because there’s still so much we want to know.

As mentioned earlier, the Japanese automaker also gave us a preview of the new Land Cruiser before it makes its debut in Frankfurt. Though they still kept their mouths sealed, they couldn’t help but share some details regarding the range-topping SUV. One thing we are certain about is that it will still be riding on a body-on-frame chassis.

The Land Cruiser nameplate has been around for about a decade now, and it is time for it to earn its well-deserved replacement. The last time it got an upgrade in the United States was just last year, which gave it a tweaked front-end design.

Since Toyota is saving the details for its premiere in Frankfurt, we don’t know much about it yet. So that leaves us thinking whether the new Land Cruiser will get some old school styling sue from the FT-4X Concept that we saw a few weeks ago in New York. We just feel like the crossover is a little too small compared to the Land Cruiser to be its replacement.

In other news, Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus, may also be considering a full-sized SUV of their own. We know that the Lexus LX570 is like the high-end Land Cruiser in the United States, as they share the same chassis and powertrain. Having said that, if there is going to be a new Toyota Land Cruiser, then chances are there will be a new full-sized SUV under Lexus too.

Press Release

At the forthcoming IAA motor show in Frankfurt (Press days September 12-13, Public days September 16-24th), two dominant themes will shape the Toyota stand.

The increasing success and relevance of hybrid technology, which will be showcased by the Toyota C-HR Hy-Power concept, a design study developed by Toyota’s European Design Centre (ED2). Its intention is to emphasize C-HR’s emotional and powerful look, while hinting at future expansion of Toyota’s hybrid powertrain line up within its core models.

Toyota’s unique 65 years heritage and QDR* Leadership is embodied by the world premiere of the new Land Cruiser. Featuring a segment-unique body-on-frame construction, the new Land Cruiser will take you wherever you want to go. And bring you back.

In addition, the Toyota stand will also feature the hot hatch Yaris GRMN and the new Auris Touring Sport “Freestyle”, which brings a higher degree of personalisation to the Auris line-up.

The Toyota Press Conference takes place at 08:50 on Tuesday September 12th, on the Toyota stand in Hall 8.
