Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Concept coming to the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

Article by Christian A., on March 7, 2011

Many of you folks were surprised by the Alfa Romeo 4C Concept unveiled last week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, but we have a surprise for you! What you didn’t know until today is that Alfa Romeo will also bring the 4C Spider Concept in September, at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show!

That’s right, the Italian manufacturer wants to receive some feedback regarding a possible open-top version of the car and the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show will be the perfect place to do it.

The new Alfa Romeo 4C is set to become firm’s halo car and will enter production in 2012. In the concept form, the 4C has a length of almost 4 metres and a wheelbase of less than 2.4 metres.

Powered by a 4-cylinder 1750 Turbo Petrol engine delivering over 200 hp and mated to the new automatic "Alfa TCT" twin dry clutch transmission, the car promises to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than five seconds and will have a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h or 155 mph. Regarding the design, the car is inspired by the limited edition 8C Competizione but also by the iconic Alfa 33 Stradale from 1967.

Designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, the two-seater mid-engine Alfa Romeo 4C Spider could be considered as one of the most beautiful and recognizable Spiders in history, which already includes the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, the Giulietta Spider of the 1950s, or the Duetto featured in The Graduate film of 1967. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider in preview is wrapped in an exclusive three-layer Glossy White livery that does not only shape this Spider, but also emphasizes its sculpted surfaces.

Moreover, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider in preview features specific carbon roll-bar cover and a carbon windscreen ring, combining and conveying the concepts of lightness and resistance according to Alfa Romeo's design philosophy of 'functional beauty'. The stylish nature of the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is also well conveyed on its new clamshell headlights and unique alloys wheels (18 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear) wrapped in large Pirelli tires.

Indeed, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider in preview is a beauty when viewed from outside. However, it is also a beauty inside. Thanks to its elemental design and the use of essential materials, the interior is built to ensure maximum driving satisfaction. To provide a perception of exclusivity, technology and lightness, the carbon fiber cell inside the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has been left in full view.

Moreover, to expand the sense of quality and luxury, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is fitted with a particularly excellent leather upholstery. On the other hand, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider in preview features length of around 4 meters, a wheelbase of less than 2.4 meters – measurements that do not only highlight the vehicle’s compactness but also accentuate its agility. Designers at Alfa Romeo worked diligently to deliver a car with optimal aerodynamic efficiency levels.

This means that the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider still features downforce of the coupé version, allowing it to become more stable as its picks up speed. Alfa Romeo also engaged in an in-depth aerodynamic study to see the possibility of minimizing air turbulence in the passenger compartment even when the soft top is open. The study determined it was possible and the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider could provide an enjoyable ride and drive even at high speeds.
