Audi A1 and A8 not coming to Frankfurt Motor Show

Article by Christian A., on August 25, 2009

Audi has decided not to let its A1 and A8 models take part in the Frankfurt Auto Show, Automobilwoche reports. No reason has been given. Nonetheless, Audi will still have the world debut of its new A5 Sportback during the show.

The A1 and A8 will be entering production later this year; which makes the pullout all the more bewildering. The Frankfurt show could have witnessed the first public appearance of the production-ready model.

It has been reported that some dealerships were a bit concerned about the price of the A1. Rumors had circulated stating that the European and the American A1 will be priced at around 20,000 euros. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen remarked earlier this year.

They said: This is impossible. You cannot charge this much for small cars. In their mind, they were thinking $18,000, because that's the conditioning our society still has. The A8 will use 8-cylinder engines, two petrol and two diesels.

Engine displacements will include the 3.0l and 4.2l, both with improved fuel efficiency and start/stop system. The S8 version will likely use a 5.0l V10 FSI engine, capable of developing 600+ horsepower. The new A8 is projected to arrive in 2010 to be sold as model year 2011. An Audi spokesman confirmed that the new flagship comes in next year.
