The all-new 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet had its world premiere at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and will be available for ordering in the United Kingdom in late October. Audi expanded the A3 Cabriolet's dimensions to achieve a sleeker profile and to allow for complete soft-top concealment when in open mode. The compact cabriolet is now longer from 4.24 to 4.42 meters with an expanded wheelbase of 2.60 meters, and is also wider from 1.77 to 1.79 meters.
The only dimension that shrank is the A3 Cabriolet's height, which is now lower by 15mm to 1.41 meters. Audi also expanded the cabriolet's luggage capacity by 60 liters (2.12 cubic ft), with an improved access to that storage space. The front of the Audi A3 Cabriolet features a single frame radiator grille flanked by flat headlamps that either use halogen or xenon bulbs depending on the version. It can also use the optional LED headlamp technology.
Thanks to its rear overhang, the A3 cabriolet now looks so proportional and elegant. Its windscreen frame is made from aluminum, with an aluminum-look trim strip running around the roof aperture. The flanks feature a firm tornado line and contoured surfaces.
A3 Cabriolet also features a soft fabric roof stretched over a lightweight magnesium-steel kinematic mechanism. With just a press of a button, the top opens or closes electro-hydraulically in less than 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. In retracted state, the top is placed in a tray that barely impacts luggage capacity. The new A3 Cabriolet will reach its first customers in the UK in March 2014.
The brand-new Audi A3 Cabriolet is accurate and dynamic in every detail; the front communicates the vehicle’s resolute character. The Singleframe radiator grille with reduced upper corners is stone gray; its cross fins and the Audi rings extend in a three-dimensional feel. A slim, chrome frame encompasses the grille. The wedge-shaped headlights with their wave-like lower edges are cut with a flat silhouette; a chrome-plated wing forms its interior.
Audi is providing more alternatives for the headlights, which include adaptive light for the xenon plus units. Its computer administers the swivelling modules so that they always project the apt light for the city, country roads and interstates; they likewise generate a distinct turning light, cornering light and all-weather light.
The driver can manage adaptive light operation through the optional Audi drive select system (standard in the Ambition line). Together with MMI navigation plus, which is likewise discretionary, the adaptive light can use advanced route information for many reasons - such as for actuating the highway light while still on the entrance ramp.
Another capability of the adaptive light furnished by Audi is variable headlight range control. Based on picture information from a camcorder, it can perceive different vehicles and developed areas. Its control unit adjusts the range of its own light as needs be.
Innovation from the full-size class: the LED headlights
The premium alternative in the all-new Audi A3 Cabriolet is the LED headlights - an innovation that comes specifically from the full-size class. Their light, with a color temperature of around 5,500 Kelvin, resembles sunlight, which is not as tiring for the eyes. The light-emitting diodes have been built to last the lifetime of the car and are highly proficient. The LED headlights likewise provide unique capacities for intersections, country roads, interstates, driving on the left and bad weather, and some involving association with MMI navigation plus.
