Article by Christian A., on September 17, 2015

Thunder Power revealed during the IAA 2015 held in Frankfurt, its newest offering for the electric vehicle segment. The Thunder Power Sedan is a ground-breaking electric car built by the Taiwanese technology company that can rival even those that use the usual internal combustion engine.

The company expects to launch the Thunder Power to the Europe market in 2017 followed by China in 2018. After that, the Sedan will then be released to the USA. There are plans to establish production facilities in Europe which will be released in due course but the 30-hectare main facility will remain to be located in Shaoxing, Zhijiang.

However, Research & Development will continue to be managed by its Milan-based European headquarters. Supporting it are additional research facilities in the USA and mainland China. With the electric vehicle industry always evolving, Thunder Power wants to make sure that it remains one step ahead of its competitors, declares CEO and Chairman Wellen Sham.

The company expects that its electric vehicles will continue to push the limits considering that it has used the knowledge of different European world-class engineers and designers. Sham adds that after five years in development, it has finally launched its new range at the IAA 2015.

The reason this Frankfurt event was chosen is because it remains to be the best motor show that showcases the newest trends and latest technological highlights in the automotive industry. Sham says that the IAA 2015 is the best setting to reveal its newest offering not just to the consumers but also to investors and the media.

Chief Technical Officer Dr Ing. Peter Tutzer adds that the real question is not if electric vehicles will become the mainstream and replace internal combustion engines, but rather a question of when. With the addition of an EV platform, the Sedan is able to optimize performance and efficiency. Thus, it gives the driver a better choice without compromising anything and ensures zero emissions, Tutzer concludes.

Exterior Design

With its passenger refinements and luxury driver, the Thunder Power is expected to set a new standard when it comes to performance and innovation. It helps that this new electric vehicle is a good combination of European design and high-technology innovation.

The exterior of the car is more than a match for its rather impressive performance. This new electric sedan carries an Italian design made by the renowned Zagato studio based in Milan. For those not familiar, Zagato is the go-to name when it comes to beautiful sports cars.

The unmistakable silhouette is made clear with the sweeping and dynamic lines. There is of course the recognizable and iconic grill. In terms of driver comfort, Thunder Power also has more to offer. Its TP-Touch system extends through the entire width of its dashboard and symbolizes the newest benchmark when it comes to entertainment, interconnectivity, and safety.

This system has all the usual features like infotainment and instrument cluster plus additional passenger comfort in the form of the internet and video streaming. However, what makes this system better than others is that it also uses intelligent driver support.

Further, by combining the infotainment systems and driver assistance, the system is not only able to merge the journey and performance data but it also processes them in order give important advice to its driver. Thus, it minimizes any unnecessary distractions and this greatly increases the safety.

The performance of the Thunder Power Sedan is helped by the rear-wheel drive, which more than exceeds the usual demands expected from any contemporary driver. It also provides exhilarating performance and maximum journey distance.

There is even the option of choosing between the 230 kW power configurations and the 320 kW. On a full charge, it can reach a maximum range of 650 km. It can even reach as far as 300 km on a charge of just 30 minutes.

Under the 320 kW power configuration, the sedan reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.0 seconds. In addition to a rear-wheel drive version, it also has the all-wheel-drive model which shows more technical capabilities and possibilities with the dedicated EV platform.

This advanced EV platform was engineered from the ground up and can optimize the sedan architecture’s efficiency through a succession of advantages and benefits. One advantage of the Thunder Power is that it remains unencumbered by any legacy issues especially on the matter of battery capacity and battery design.

It’s typically the battery that is compromised when automakers attempt to create electric derivatives from mainstream cars. The microprocessor-controlled battery pack has a power of 125 kWh and its modular design is based generally on high-energy-density lithium-ion cell technology.

As such, this gives the battery pack a number of advantages. First is that it is lighter compared to other systems and is less expensive to manufacture. Additionally, since it utilizes a state-of-the-art charge balancing system, both the battery aging and its degradation are slowed.

With the battery pack also having floor-integration, it has the longest driving range and highest capacity though superior volume. The Sedan has an overall weight of under 2,000 kg due to the hybrid body structure. Thus it has more efficiency in terms of energy absorption and higher static with dynamic stiffness.

The modular system is also the basis of the flexible chassis, allowing the range of the Sedan to be extended even further compared to other variants like the Compact, Crossover, and SUV.
