Chevrolet and Sony Computer Entertainment America, LLC (SCEA) are offering a camouflaged Corvette C7 Test Prototype as a vehicle download in the PlayStation 3 (PS3) racing game Gran Turismo 5. The Corvette C7 Test Prototype is a result of the collaboration between Chevrolet and Polyphony Digital Inc., the developers of the award-winning Gran Turismo franchise, thus providing gamers an authentic driving experience in a Corvette prototype that is presently available to only a few people in the world.
During the creation of the virtual Corvette prototype, the developers paid careful attention to the smallest details -- from the creases and wrinkles in the soft camouflage used to certain driving characteristics that are currently being tuned and refined ahead of the real vehicle’s much-anticipated official debut in January 2013.
All six previous generations of the Corvette have been accessible to Gran Turismo players since the game’s launch, with the Chevrolet nameplate becoming one of the most popular vehicles in the game. The camouflaged Corvette C7 Test Prototype is now available for download through the PlayStation Store from a PlayStation 3 at no extra cost and can be raced on some of the famous race tracks in the world, including Daytona International Speedway and the Nurburgring in Germany, which is incidentally one of the tracks used in testing the new Corvette’s driving dynamics.
“Until now, only the most skilled drivers on the Corvette team have been authorised to push the test prototypes to the limits on some of the most challenging track surfaces in the world,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Global Marketing. “Through this unique collaboration with Gran Turismo, Chevrolet is able, for the first time, to give performance car enthusiasts access to such an exclusive driving experience.”
With the official debut of the new Corvette C7 Stingray, Chevrolet is once again showcasing what modern performance truly is. Not surprising, after all the only vehicle that can carry the Stingray title is a Corvette that comes with the best balance when it comes to performance, design, and technology. Compared to the previous version, the new one only has two components that it shares with the former.
New features include the powertrain, the frame structure, and of course the supporting technologies. Both designs of the interior and the exterior are also new. General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said that similar to the 1963 Sting Ray, the best Corvettes will always symbolize what it means to take the lead when it comes to performance. This is also about having an exciting design and being able to provide the most advanced technologies, he continued.
Overall, the goal is to give a driving experience that is truly breathtaking, he added. Reuss shared that because of the latest developments in engineering, technology, and design, the new Corvette is expected to go farther that any version before has ever done.
Powering the 2014 Corvette Stingray is an engine that can deliver 450 hp (335 kW) with peak torque of 450 lb.-ft. (610 Nm). With this inside, the new model can be considered as the most capable yet with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph below 4 seconds. It can even attain at least 1g when it comes to cornering grip. Chevrolet said it may be the most fuel-efficient too with rating that exceeds the prior model’s EPA-estimated 26 mpg.
