2011 Geneva Motor Show Preview: 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS by Carlsson

Carlsson revealed today ahead of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show its new tuning package for the all-new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS. As you may know already, Carlsson is specialized in tuning Mercedes-Benz engines, which means that it will customize each version of the CLS.

As expected, the most powerful version will be the one based on the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG powered by an impressive V8 biturbo engine and delivering 600 hp (441 kW).

For the 2012 CLS 350 CDI model, Carlsson promises an additional Carlsson C-Tronic DIESEL POWER control unit, which will allow you to improve the power of your car from 265 hp (195kW) to 320 hp (235 kW), while maximum torque will be increased from 650 to 780 Newton metre.

With the new numbers, the car will be able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds instead of the standard 6.2 seconds. The design of the car is completed by the new 20-inch wheels designed by Carlsson but also by the new C-Tronic Suspension which can lower the car by up to 30 millimetres.

Inside, the automobile manufacturer cultivates traditional craftsmanship by using finest materials such as leather, exclusive alcantara, carbon, best root wood, and several other exclusive nature materials.

The front design, which is comparable to that of a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, is visually compelling. The radiator grille, separate from the bonnet, and the incorporated air inlets with black grilles make the overall package appear more athletic.

Moreover, the large central star dominates the radiator grille, emphasizing the similarities between the brand’s vehicles and their brand identity. The LED High Performance headlamps further distinguish the vehicle from the rest.

The headlamps are the first in the world to employ LED technology among all regular dynamic light functions. The said distinguishing feature was designed to have three layers: 1) the upper layer containing an LED indicator; 2) the middle layer containing a LED side light that provides LED low beam functions; and 3) the lowest layer containing the main beam and night view functions. The side light in the middle layer is also visible with the dipped beam function turned on.

71 LED lights definitely enhance the road view better than ever. However, the most exciting characteristic of the latest model is the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class outline boasting long proportions. A new chemistry between lines and areas improves the dynamic and sporty appearance of the vehicle.

For example, the front edge above the wings angles off toward the rear edge, a design cue labeled as “dropping line”. This new language indicates a contemporary formal design element stemming from decades of Mercedes history.

Furthermore, the new CLS is made special with a muscular sports-coupe-like shoulder line above the rear axle. The flared wheel arches also would not go unnoticed as they resemble a feline predator’s thighs.

These design cues underscore the sportiness of the vehicle. Meanwhile, the side view is completed with wrap-around LED taillights. The broad shoulder line, visible from behind as it backs the hardtop, emphasizes the shape of the new CLS. Completing the aesthetic appeal at the rear is a wide metal insert.
